Who We Are: CWR is committed to world revival. Founded as a
Christian ministry in 1965 by Selwyn Hughes, we have grown into
an international publishing and training organisation which seeks
to enable people to apply God’s Word to their everyday lives and
relationships.
CWR Today, CWR’s newsletter, is published three times a year. Its purpose
is to encourage effective prayer and regular Bible reading, and to represent
all aspects of CWR’s national and international ministry. This is a free title,
however recipients are invited to make a small contribution each year.
Concept development, editing, design and production by CWR.

Editorial
Numbers used as headline grabbers are
eye-catching, calling for our attention
in a busy world. In the midst of this, it’s
all too easy to forget that each number
represents a life; someone who gets up in
the morning, has hopes and dreams, sheds
tears of sadness and happiness. Someone
like you and me.
Unless we are careful, we become fixed
on the number and forget the person.
David begins Psalm 103: ‘Let all that I am
praise the Lord: with my whole heart, I will
praise his holy name … may I never forget
the good things he does for me’ (NLT)
and then catalogues God’s blessings. We
list these numbers (page 4) for the same
reason – not to be self-congratulatory but
to praise God and to help remind ourselves
that God touches real lives. It never ceases
to amaze me how God breathes life into
written words then enables them to be in
the right hands, at the right time and in
the right place to encourage, caution and
guide His people.
I hope I can encourage you to invest in
a life today.
Sincerely yours in His name,

NEWS IN BRIEF
Practice of Biblical Counselling
The final part of CWR/Asia’s ‘Introduction to Christian Counselling
and Pastoral Care Programme’, which ran for the first time in
Singapore over two weekends earlier this year, was attended
by 32 people. Course attendees came from a wide variety of
backgrounds and nearby countries. On completion of this course,
some people will continue their work as pastors, counsellors and
volunteers. Others plan to pursue postgraduate studies on the MA
in Counselling which CWR hopes to commence in 2014.
Volunteering at
Pilgrim Hall
Celebrating achievement
In July, the second BA cohort graduated at an exciting ceremony at
Guildford Cathedral. It was a day to celebrate each student’s four
years of concentrated work that led to the degree conferment. In
September, our HE provision was further extended when the MA
in Counselling programme commenced, providing an opportunity
for both our own graduates and external applicants to pursue their
studies in greater depth. MA students will extend their personal
counselling skills and competence, reflect on a range of theoretical
models and learn to evaluate research methods and practice.
This summer, Erika, Csaba,
Kristina, Michael, Martin,
Adam and Anna (all from
Czech Republic and Hungary),
and Sander (from Holland)
form our Pilgrim Hall
volunteer team. During their
time with CWR they will be
fulfilling a range of roles within
hospitality. This gives the
volunteers a great opportunity
to develop both their Englishspeaking skills and their
confidence in working in a
conferencing environment.
Welcome to CWR
David Davis has recently joined CWR as Marketing Manager, bringing
a considerable wealth of experience in communication strategies,
marketing and social media. This is not David’s only new start – in
June he became a new father, to twin boys Samuel and Joseph. His
wife Sarah completed a Certificate in Counselling at Waverley just
before the boys were born. Our best wishes go to David, Sarah and
their new family.

In recent years, we have seen God’s
hand in building and growing our ministry
to children through some extremely
creative ideas, resources and authors.
At a time when people may be struggling
to pay the bills and find employment, we
have seen remarkable faithfulness on the
part of friends and family in continuing
to provide the children they love and care
for with books and resources that will help
them build a strong faith and love for God
and His Word. They tell us time and time
again that investing now in their children’s
or grandchildren’s lives is worth every
penny, and they are only too happy to
grasp books and Bible-reading notes that
will be loved and remembered well into
adulthood, and that will sow seeds that
bear fruit in the future.

investing ... in children’s
lives is worth every penny
We have a wide range of books for those
in the very early years – starting with board
books, simple Bibles and activity books, and
beautifully illustrated Christmas stories.
Our Pens series has grown since its loveable
characters were introduced a couple of years
ago, with young children enjoying daily Bible
notes, special books for Easter, Christmas,
Halloween and Starting School, and some
fun animated cartoons, too!
All the Pens resources are authored by
Alexa Tewkesbury, with whom we’ve been
working for over seven years. Alexa also
writes all our Topz Stories and Topz Diaries
– now firm favourites with avid Topz fans.
It’s always great to be out and about with
CWR resources at exhibitions and events,
and have children (and adults!) bounce up
to us and declare their long-standing love
for all things Topz!
Alexa says: ‘I began
writing professionally when
my son and daughter were
quite young. Because I spent so much
time in their children’s world, watching
children’s TV with them and reading
children’s books, it seemed very natural
to write for them, too. Much of my writing
is quite issue-based. I think that, today,
children are presented with life’s less
pleasant realities far younger than they
used to be, so they expect stories to
reflect what they know and what they’ve
experienced in a realistic way. If they’ve
been through similar situations, a story
needs that ring of truth to enable them to
identify with (and perhaps even be helped
by) the characters involved. I do think that
writers have a huge responsibility towards
their readers. We have the opportunity
to present positive values and helpful
role models within the context of stories
that children will (hopefully) want to
read. Whilst they are still in the throes of
growing and developing and finding out
who they are, I do find that quite
a privilege. ‘

In recent years we have also partnered
with Andy Robb, producing some fun and
very creative books re-telling Bible stories
that are bound to intrigue children: weird,
gory, crazy, wild and barmy describe
just some of the stories that Andy points
children to, whilst encouraging them to
look up the events in their own Bible to see
how the stories end. The 50 Bible Stories
series has very quickly become a favourite
amongst children, adults and staff!
Andy’s latest offerings feature Professor
Bumblebrain, who introduces children to God,
Jesus, Creation, Bible Heroes, Prayer and
Parables. A zany approach grabs children’s
attention, and teaches them some wellknown truths in a unique way. Andy describes
below why he is so committed to creating
quality work for children:
‘I was brought up in a
Christian household so the
Bible was always around
but it wasn’t until I became a Christian
myself that God’s Word sprang into life in a
powerful way. Having come to understand
that God (and the Bible) was far from boring,
a passion was birthed in me to help children
come to that realisation for themselves.
It’s important to me that God isn’t
misrepresented by watering things down
to win children over. Instead I choose to
package the fullness of God’s truth in
as entertaining a way as possible, using
facts, humour and fun illustrations. The
challenge in this is keeping things fresh
and maintaining the attention of the reader
so that they don’t give up after a few
pages. If I’m ever in danger of getting stale
and samey there’s a good chance the child
will get bored as well.
The downside to what I do (if I can call
it that) is that it can sometimes be a bit
solitary, added to which you have to be
resigned to the fact that feedback and
plaudits from your readership may not
come your way very often, however popular
the books may be.
But the plus side is living with the
certain knowledge that kingdom seed is
being sown in children’s hearts with each
and every book.’

I package the fullness
of God’s truth in as
entertaining a way
as possible.
There must be a child in your life who
would benefit from your prayers, and also
from some of these life-changing resources.
Why not consider giving them a subscription
to Topz Bible notes, or buying one of the
many books/comics/cartoons we have to
offer? We have only mentioned some here –
so visit www.cwr.org.uk/children to see the
whole range and to choose the ones most
suitable for the child you want to encourage
in their faith.

Pilgrim Hall
Holidays, Church Weekends,
Conferences, Meetings,
Weddings … and more!
A
Here are just some of the
features of Pilgrim Hall:
• Fully-catered accommodation for up to 110
• Largest conference room seats up to 125
• Tennis court, putting green and
croquet lawn
• Heated swimming pool (summer months)
• Games room with table tennis,
pool table etc
Country House makes a great
setting for all kinds of events.
Pilgrim Hall is no exception. From
the grandeur of the oak-panelled Baronial
Hall to sprawling grounds with lofty trees
and lovely views of the Sussex countryside,
it is a super setting. Amongst it all, God is
at the heart and a sense of peace and warm
welcome prevails.
As well as CWR’s courses, there are plenty
of opportunities for you to use Pilgrim Hall
for other events. Many churches come for
a weekend, week or day away – a fantastic
opportunity for people to really get to
know each other and spend time together
with God. Larger church groups can enjoy
the whole place to themselves – Pilgrim
Hall becomes ‘your own country house’.
For children and young people, time away
with their church can be very significant
in their walk with God, and they have
enormous fun exploring the grounds!

IVORY COAST: ‘It was Holy chaos!’ said evangelist Daniel
Kolenda in describing a massive gospel event in Abidjan. ‘The
sick were healed in huge numbers – all in the name and to the
glory of Jesus Christ! When I preached the gospel, the response
was so overwhelming it literally hurt my ears!’
INDIA: Some 3,000 people surrendered their lives to
Christ during gospel meetings in Assam – good news
for north-east India where the Church is faced with
the challenge of reaching people who belong to over a
hundred main tribes and several hundred sub-tribes.
Hundreds of thousands attended the meetings on a site that
was once the scene of death and destruction as a result of the
region’s ongoing civil war. Blind people received their sight,
cripples walked, cancers disappeared and so many experienced
God’s redemptive work through salvation in Christ.

Christian and other charities hold their
conferences and meetings at Pilgrim Hall,
some drawing people from all over the
world. With Gatwick Airport and the ports
within easy reach and London just over an
hour away by train, Pilgrim Hall is a good
location for those coming a distance.
Pilgrim Hall loves weddings! The team
is experienced in putting together the
complete wedding reception and guests
have the option of staying overnight.
Alternatively, the grounds offer the space
for a marquee wedding for which you may
like to organise your own catering.
We also offer a programme of ‘Country
Breaks’ – relaxed holiday weeks, with
worship and Bible teaching. The August
‘Family Holiday’ is a livelier week, with a
special programme for children and young
people. The July ‘Seniors’ Holiday’ is an
equally popular week, with various activities
alongside the teaching. At Christmas,
Pilgrim Hall is beautifully decorated, full of
festive cheer and the joy of celebrating our
Lord’s birth.

Discovering the value
CWR tutor Andy Peck describes
his experience of coaching
I
had arrived at the office a little uncertain about what to
expect. The Senior Editor of Christianity magazine had told
me to have a morning of coaching and then to write an article
outlining my experiences. My coach was an Executive Coach who
spent most of his time with stockbrokers and bankers in the city
of London. We knew each other, but even so I was still more than a
little nervous as we met. After the greeting and small talk we got
down to business.
‘OK, so what do you want to work towards?’ he asked. A simple
enough question, but I discovered that answering that question
took an hour of the three available! I learned from the session
that his job as a coach was to help me make progress in the areas
that I identified. He wasn’t there to tell me what to do or think, but
to help me work out why I had not made the progress I wanted.
Coaches look to identify blockages or limiting factors, and support
their clients in making the progress they identify. His questions to
me included: So what’s stopping you? What have you tried before?
What has worked and what hasn’t worked? How do you intend to
use what we have discussed?
It was hard work, but it wasn’t difficult to see why this kind of
coaching is enormously valuable in many walks of life and in the
church, too. It’s an activity that fits in well with the belief that
God is at work in our lives to will and to act according to His good
purpose (Phil. 2:13). God has placed us in church communities that
can act as a support and encouragement to help us understand
what He is doing and cheer us on. A good coach in a Christian
context is looking to work with God in what He is doing in
someone’s life.
PAGE 10

of coaching
I discovered when I had duly written about
and published my experience in the magazine
that not everyone would call it, ‘coaching’.
Some prefer ‘mentoring’ and there is no
standard definition on which everyone
agrees. But what was clear was that coaching
skills can be used effectively in many areas
of the church: by leaders as they equip their
flock for works of service and by all believers
as they come alongside other Christians.
But this is not just a bolt-on skill that can
be used by the church, rather like we might
utilise the skills of someone on the sound
desk, or with a flair for lighting. Coaching
ties in with the way Jesus Himself coached
His twelve disciples and others He came
into contact with. Indeed, if you were to
follow Jesus around for a day when He was
on earth, what would you find Him doing?
A good deal of His time was spent with the
Twelve, reflecting upon events and asking
them what they were learning from His
activity. At times he would say specifically,
‘Do it this way’. But on other occasions He
adopted the less directive approach which
coaching provides: in Mark’s Gospel He asks
over fifty questions of others, many of which
helped people grapple with their inner world
and why they behaved as they did.

CWR is offering a three-day course
focusing specifically on coaching and
mentoring within a Christian framework.
We are delighted that Beverley Shepherd, a
coach and mentor who often leads courses
at CWR, is leading this course with me.
Topics include:
• understanding the role of coaching and
how it differs from counselling or spiritual
direction
•the coach as ‘change facilitator’
• exploring your coaching style using the
Strength Deployment Inventory
• learning to work with the supreme coach:
the Holy Spirit
• building effective coaching relationships
• identifying the ‘interference factors’ in
achieving change
• examining and assessing different
coaching models
• understanding and practising essential
coaching skills
• learning how to maintain motivation
• discovering how to give constructive
feedback
• facilitating the setting of learning goals
and decision making.
We are excited to see what God will do with
this new venture.

Especially for Women
at Waverley
CWR has been helping women grow in their relationship
with God and others for approximately twenty-five years.
We offer women’s weekends at both Waverley Abbey
House and Pilgrim Hall, overseas seminars, and regional
events around the UK. We have adapted the teaching from
live events to create various books and in 2003 our daily
devotional Inspiring Women Every Day was launched. In
2005 we established the annual Woman to Woman training
course to encourage women with a desire to minister to
others. We have reached over 100,000 women around the
world – demonstrating that biblical principles are deeper
than cultural differences.
Jeannette Barwick, a former
staff member at CWR,
describes how it all began:
‘For twenty years it
was my joy and privilege to
head up CWR’s ministry to
women and work alongside
some wonderful women of
God. Selwyn Hughes took
me to Waverley just before
it opened in 1987, and on
leaving I said ‘I would love
to have something there
especially for women’. I
sensed something special
about Waverley that women
would enjoy. I’m not a
visionary but I have learnt
through experience that
the word ‘something’ is
spiritually loaded – a word
to be prayerfully explored.
When Waverley was up and
running, I suggested to the
Directors that we introduce
some days specifically
for women. With their
encouragement we began
with one-day events; first
outreach, then teaching, and
so the Ministry to Women at
Waverley was born. As I look
back over the years my heart
is full of praise and gratitude
to God for all that was
accomplished in His name. ‘

Many people have contributed to this area
of CWR ministry, including Lynn Penson
who led the team from 2008–2012. Paula
Buchel has recently joined us to take the
lead in building on the current programme.
‘I am passionate about
helping women to seek
God’s face and know Him
more. I’ve been married for
fifteen years, and am mum
to three children aged 12, 10
and 7. I’ve worked in both Johannesburg
and London, enjoying a rich 20-year
corporate career in the banking sector
and in consulting. Throughout my
life I have been involved in Christian
leadership. Outside of my exciting new
role within CWR I practice as a personal
and business Coach.’
Paula is no stranger to CWR – she has
attended courses here over the past few
years and describes how the Lord has
been nudging her towards more full-time
women’s ministry.
‘I am excited about building upon
the strong base of learning and times
of refreshing that women already enjoy
through the ministry and am looking to how
we can grow even further to meet women
of all ages, wherever they are in their walk
with Jesus.‘
Please see the diary on the final page of

REVIVAL NOW
Meeting Christ in the Desert
Egypt, says one leader of an international ministry, ‘is at the eye
of a storm’. But, he adds, ‘Christians there are doing great things’.
Since the 2011 revolution, pressure
on and persecution of Christians has
intensified, with a surge in violent attacks.
In the summer of 2012 leaflets from militant
Muslim groups were distributed throughout
Egypt calling on ‘all brothers and sisters’ to
‘kill or physically attack the enemies of the
religion of Allah – Christians ... the slaves of
the Cross’. One report points to an increase
in kidnapping, forced conversion to Islam
and forced marriage of Christian women.
The storm has caused many hundreds
of Christians to flee the land to the USA and
elsewhere, but for other believers it isn’t
an option. Many are too poor to leave but
others who have the option are remaining
to be Christ’s witnesses. One of them said,
‘Why are we here? Because God wants us to
be here because He is doing mighty things.’
Late last year 10,000 young people
met in a desert stadium to sing, pray and
worship the Lord. Later that same month
an even larger event was held, drawing
45,000 people. Hundreds of buses brought
people of all ages to the stadium. The main
aim of the event was to present the gospel
message and call on people to give their
lives to Jesus Christ. An estimated 25,000
people responded to the call.
‘Great harvest!’ one of the Christian
leaders reported. ‘The sight of thousands
of people proclaiming their desire to
accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour is hard
to describe in words.’ Most of those who
attended were from the Coptic Orthodox
Church and the Christian leader was amazed
one night to see that the main preacher of
the gospel was an Orthodox priest!
Those who attended were challenged
to put cigarettes, drugs, magic charms and
other things into large wicker baskets that

were passed around. They were also urged
to write down sins they needed to repent of
and put them in the baskets. Twelve baskets
were filled with these items on the first
night. It was a striking symbol from each
person who did this that they had made a
sincere decision to follow Christ. At each
meeting more than half the people there
stood up to pray and repent in response to
the altar call. A special programme was run
for some 1,000 children.
Two one-day meetings were held in
conjunction with the desert gatherings –
5,000 people attended a gathering in Cairo
and 6,000 in another city, Assiut.
There was another audience: an
estimated 2.3 million people who followed
the main gatherings on two Christian
satellite channels which broadcast live six
and a half hours each day to other countries.

that rushed down the street and up into the air. This was
followed by stillness and a gentle rain.’

One Bible. One Year.
The Bible is the catalyst for change and renewal in our churches.
It can change culture, provide essential wisdom and ignite
passion in our relationship with God. Yet somehow, in our hands,
the Bible can become stagnant and ordinary – and so we become
the same.
Reading the Bible regularly is difficult
because life is busy and full of distractions.
With so much competing for our attention
we can forget just how important it is to
dedicate our days to God. It’s all too easy to
lose focus, but together we can strengthen
our resolve to place God and His Word back
at the centre of our lives.
The key is: more of the Bible, more
often. Have you ever thought of reading
the entire Bible in a year? What if you did,
knowing that your church were reading the
same words with you? Imagine the benefits.
This creates a culture centred on God’s
Word, encourages people to talk about
what they’re reading and spurs everyone
on to complete the year.
‘One Bible. One Year. Together.’ is about
the greatest journey of all: our daily walk
with God. The resource supporting it is
the Every Day with Jesus One Year Bible
(NIV 2011 edition). This provides readers

MoreIsh
MoreIsh offers you 52 short stories, sermons and studies as
food for thought. In this book Ishamel shares some thoughts
derived from his ministry. As well as considering some wellknown Bible characters, he also offers thought-provoking views
on issues such as guilt, jealousy, unity and the freedom to do
what God likes. Ish’s easy-to-read, engaging style, liberally
punctuated with his trademark humour, reveals the vulnerability
of a man whose main purpose in life is to point others to Jesus.

In this vibrant and liberating
twelve-week devotional,
Untangled, Jen Baker urges
all women to journey towards

the ties of such hindrances as
unforgiveness, anxiety and regret
– but more, that they release their
God-given ability to influence the
world for His Kingdom.

Every Day with Jesus
in Sri Lanka
Every Day with Jesus is translated
and widely read around the world.
Reverend Divapriya de Silva oversees one
concurrent translation. Mick Brooks caught
up with him when he visited Waverley
Abbey House from Sri Lanka ...
[Mick:] Pastor, can you tell us about this
important ministry?
[Rev de Silva:] To be part of the millions
of people who read Every Day with Jesus
is a great blessing. I am a member of the
Editorial Board which translates the text,
along with Sunil Fernando, Mrs Prithi
Fernando and Sudarman de Silva. We meet
every other month when we receive the
main proof for the next issue. We publish in
both Sinhala and Tamil.
What does it mean to have Every Day
with Jesus in your native language?
It was our great hope that one day it would
be available in our native language. It has
a great psychological understanding that
grips people. Also, we have learnt that
the Christian gospel is best presented in a
people’s own language, context and lifestyle.
Pastor, on behalf of the team here and
all the people that benefit from the
translations, I want to thank you and
your committee for your dedicated work.
Bless you in all that you do.
Thank you very much, Mick. God bless you.
Could you share with us something
of the joys and challenges facing the
Sri Lankan church?
It’s an answer to our prayers that after
thirty years of a cruel war we have peace.
But absence of arms is not proof of peace:
there is still bitterness in people’s minds.
We have a responsibility to address this
because we believe in the Lord Jesus
Christ, who reconciled the world.
