Ideas and aims
Make Sidney a more environmentally friendly college
Sidney is currently one of the least energy efficient colleges in Cambridge (see
table below). I’d like to work with the Green Impact initiative to make college
more sustainable. This might involve proposed changes to heating, water and
insulation for example. It might even be possible to get some energy from
renewable sources.
Meat-Free Mondays
I would like to see Meat-Free Mondays carried through in
Sidney since it got so much support when I proposed it as a
motion last term.
Sidney would be the first college in Cambridge to
introduce Meat-Free Mondays, and I’d like to see many
more follow our lead as part of a wider campaign.
We’re 16th! Let’s
try to improve
that, Sidney
Encourage recycling and reduce waste
We have a pretty good recycling policy in Sidney at the
moment, but still lots of wastage goes on. I’d like to make
sure people are using recycling bins properly and emptying
them regularly. I’d also like to consider introduction of a
vegetable garden and compost heap, and look into food
wastage in hall.
Food and Clothes donation
I’d like to work with SCA to offer food/clothes donation at the end of
term, and to build links with local charities.
Raising awareness of homelessness
Sidney is surrounded by homelessness in the centre of Cambridge but
we don’t really make and effort to address it. I’d like to work with
SCA to help put on charity events and raise awareness of this
important issue.
Represent your views on environmental and ethical affairs
Sidney supports divestment! This is part of
I’d like to liaise with green officers at other colleges to help implement
University-wide initiatives on a college scale, and help to represent the the Zero Carbon DiveSt Campaign.
views of Sidneyites on these issues. I’d also like to work with the other members of SSCSU to
raise any concerns regarding ethical and environmental affairs.
Why me?
Those of you who know me will know I’m very keen on the environment and the welfare of
people and planet. I was also charities rep at my school, which involved organising events and
working with community projects.
I’m part of Cambridge Zero Carbon Society – we’re trying to get the University to divest from
fossil fuels companies. If you want to discuss our campaign, talk to me 
It would be great to see colleges also follow this initiative, so if we are successful I would like to
try to get Sidney to divest as well.
