What is a prepositional
phrase?
A prep. phrase acts as a modifier (either adverb, adjective, or noun)
Where is the preposition
located in a prepositional
phrase?
The preposition is the first word of the prep. phrase. The prep. phrase ends with a
noun.
Ex. to the teacher, on the table, from the chair
What is an appositive?
An appositive is an interrupting definition
(it is EXTRA info/not necessary info. in a sentence)
Ex. My cute beagle, Zoe, begged for a treat.
What is a verbal?
A verbal is a group of words that look like a verb, but act as noun or
adjective!
What are the three types
of verbals?
Gerunds, Participles, and Infinitives
What is a gerund?
An –ing verb form used as a noun! Ex. Writing is my favorite subject!
What is a participle?
A participle is any verb form that is used as an adjective.
Ex. The boy talking is bad!
What are the two errors
ppl make when using
participial phrases?
1. misplaced modifiers- the noun being modified is in the wrong place
2. dangling modifiers-when the noun being modified is not in the sentence at all
What is an inifinitive?
An infinitive is the “to +” verb form that is used as a noun or a modifier.
Ex. We went to play basketball.
What is split infinitive?
Ex. I said not to talk!
An error!
Ex. X I need to really study hard.
 I really need to study hard. or  I need to study really hard.
Summary: A phrase is a group of words that does not have a subject and a predicate and functions as ONE part of
speech.
