What maths will you use to choose a sports team?

This is a BOX PLOT
The distance between the two ends....
The Median is the line in the box
Is called the Range
L.Obj:

If we know the Median and the range of
some data we can use the information to
“Guess” what we might expect.
This is called
“Interpreting Data”.

You have to choose the team for
sports day.
There are some simple rules to remember.....
1. No athlete can do more than 2 events
2. Every athlete MUST do one event
3. The athletes cannot do two events that start
at the same time
L.Obj:
You will get a sheet of
statistics for your team
members....

L.Obj:
... And also a
starting
sheet to
complete as
you decide
who you
want to be in
which event.

We know Eric has a range of 10 seconds for the
200m and his “average” is 34 seconds.
Fred on the other hand has a range of 6 seconds
and an “average” of 36.
Who do you think will win?

At the end of the task races will be run.
The results will be displayed and
you can see how your athlete
performed compared to the
other athletes.
You will need to record
the points your athlete
got in the
race/discipline in the
space provided.
L.Obj:
1st – 25 points
2nd – 20 points
3rd – 17 points
4th – 15 points
5th – 12 points
6th – 10 points
7th – 8 points
8th – 6 points
9th – 5 points
10th – 4 points
11th – 3 points
12th – 2 points
13th – 1 point

As there are 13 boys and 13
girls in your team points will
be awarded like this.....
34 events means the perfect
score would be 850 points
L.Obj:
to analyse averages and databases
The winning team is the team with the highest
aggregate number of points gained.
