Cuttings Barrie’s Garden Club http://www.barriegardenclub.com April 2015 Upcoming Garden Club Events April 7th Garden Club Meeting 7:15 pm – 9:00 pm Guest Speaker – Celia Roberts “De-Mystifying Floral Design” Celia Roberts was one of the 20 designers who entered the “imposed” Class 12 titled “Conundrum” and won a Silver Award (2nd place) for her delightful design at the 11th World Flower Show ‘A Floral Odyssey’, held in Dublin, Ireland, in 2014. Other winners were from New Zealand, South Africa and the UK. In an imposed class, entrants do not know what material will be available until they arrive in the floral hall. Everyone is provided the same material and supplies that may be used in whole or part. The only tools that can be brought in by the designer are a stapler, wire cutters, flower cutters and a knife. With only four hours from first viewing the materials until the completion of the design, there is quite a bit of pressure undertaking this type of class. She decided to use four calla lilies, two pieces of corkscrew hazel, all 15 pieces of flex grass plus two limes and some of the accessories. This is the second time Celia has entered the World Show and her first win. (information from: http://www.gardenontario.org/docs/trillium_news_2014-03_fall.pdf) Celia is Co-Chair of the Cloverleaf Garden Club Flower Shows, a Director of the Oakville Horticultural Society, a Past Director of OHA District 6, an accredited GCO Floral Design Judge, an accredited RBG Horticultural Judge and a member of the Toronto Garden Club where she is Chair, Canada Blooms Staging Committee and a member of the Canada Blooms design Committee. Kim April Garden Tasks and Garden Maintenance Beware of late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until much later in May and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Deadhead daffodils and narcissi; give them a liquid feed or a sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking neat, and to encourage new flowers. Start spring cleaning. Hoe your borders when the ground warms up but don’t mulch until the ground is completely thawed. When the soil is warmed up and things start to grow, add a general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. Start removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives. Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if you dig it in the buried grass will regrow. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels! Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails. They love tulips and delicacies such as the delicious young shoots of delphiniums and the like, so use pet-friendly slug pellets or crushed egg shells and drench the ground around hostas with liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface.
