
Apple iPad (Generation 2 onwards) with some music on it
The latest Musaic Control App
802.11n Wi-Fi/Ethernet Router (used in Access point mode) – Apple Airport Extreme strongly
recommended.
Laptop with UPnP/DLNA server installed (Asset recommended) with downloaded music on it.
The laptop is optional, but showing playback from DLNA/UPnP is normally a good demo to do
1 x Musaic MP5, matching PSU and mains lead
1 x Musaic MP10, matching PSU and mains lead
Premium Spotify Account (if you are doing demo in a country where Spotify is available)
Access to an Ethernet socket at the demo location that provides Internet Access
1 x Ethernet lead (RJ45-RJ45)
A mains extension lead with 4 sockets on it also makes the connections easy
Optional: Apple TV (for mirroring iPad to a TV if desired)
Background
The Musaic system can play from Internet Radio, UPnP/DLNA servers, music sync’d to an iPad and
from streaming services. To give a good demo, you will ideally want to briefly show music playing from
all of these sources (UPnP/DNLA is optional).
At Musaic, we do not normally demo Bluetooth as most people know how this works. Instead we
concentrate on the Wi-Fi enabled features. There is however a separate document with some guidance
on Bluetooth if you do want to include it in the demo.
Our suggested demo uses Wi-Fi to connect the Musaic Players to a wireless router/access point which
is connected to the installed network at the demo location to give you internet access. You will need to
bring your own wireless router/access point to the demo as part of your demo kit.
By setting up this way, all of your devices will already know the Wi-Fi password on your router/access
point, so will all connect to it automatically. This means you will not need to do any Wi-Fi setup on the
demo day.
The process in this document goes into detail, and therefore it might look complicated, but
in essence all you need to do is, in advance of the demo:
1. Setup an access point that you bring with you (DHCP turned off, known Network name and
password).
2. Connect the Musaic units, iPad and Laptop (with UPnP/DLNA server installed) if desired, so that
they already know the Network name and Password and everything will connect automatically
on the day of the demo.
3. Make sure that you have some good music content (with cover artwork) sync’d to your iPad and
optionally on a laptop that has a suitable DNLA/UPnP server on it.
Configuring the equipment – DO THIS IN ADVANCE OF THE DEMO DAY
You only need to do this once:
 Download the latest Musaic iOS App to an iPad (it’s always best to use an iPad rather than
Android device for demos). Search for Musaic on the Apple App store.
 If using an Apple Airport Express (highly recommended – excellent dual band Wi-Fi
performance) download the Airport Utility configuration App to the iPad. Search for Airport
Utility on the Apple App store. There are also versions of this utility for Mac and PC laptops but

we will concentrate on the iPad version here as that way you will always
have it on the demo iPad.
Plug an Ethernet lead into the WAN port of the router (bottom one for
Airport Extreme – see picture) and the other end into an Ethernet socket on
a network that gives you Internet Access. Now connect the Airport Extreme
to the mains.
Configure the Router
1. Open the Airport Utility on your iPad. Select the Create a New Network
option.
2. Give the Airport a Network Name/Wi-Fi name that you will not change from
this point on. We suggest using Musaic Demo.
3. Setup a password you will not change from this point on. We suggest just
WAN Port
using Musaic Demo again.
4. Make sure DHCP/NAT is turned off (it should be by default). This is because we want the
installed network at the demo location to provide the IP addresses to all of our demo
equipment.
5. Now you can connect to the Musaic Demo wireless network on your iPad. Make sure it works
and that you have internet access (try accessing a webpage via Safari).
Connect the Musaic units to the Musaic Demo Wi-Fi
1. Connect the MP5 or MP10 to its PSU and connect the PSU to the mains. The Standby/Off light
should be red. Only connect one unit at this stage.
2. Press and hold the Standby/On button and boot up the unit. The LED will start to flash blue.
3. After a few seconds press and hold the Reset button on the back for 3 seconds.
4. Now wait 30 seconds - the unit has been reset and is booting up. The LED will flash blue then
eventually purple when it has booted.
5. Go to the Wi-Fi Settings page of the iPad and look for a network called Musaic _XXXXXX_AJ
where the X’s will be some letters and numbers unique to your Musaic Player. It make take
some time to appear.
6. Once it appears connect to it on your iPad. A webpage that the Player is serving should appear.
If for some reason it does not type http://172.19.42.1/ into the address bar on your iPad.
7. In the webpage, name the unit (you can use MP5/MP10 or maybe Kitchen/Lounge etc.) and
then press next.
If you want to change the language used
for the setup click the blue icon:
Click this icon in the top right to
change the language.
8. Click the drop down button for the field ‘Network Name’. A list of Wi-Fi networks that the Musaic
Player can see should appear:
Select the Musaic Demo network (assuming you called
it that).
Now type your password into the ‘Password’ field. The
characters will be hidden; to show the characters so
they can be more easily checked click the ‘Show
Password’ box.
The DHCP box should be already ticked and should
not be changed.

9. The player should now connect to the Musaic Demo network and its LED will go solid Blue (this
takes some time). If the process does not work, check that you typed the password correctly. If
still you have an issue simply press the reset button on the back of the unit and try again.
10. Once you have connected one player connect the other one to the mains and follow the same
procedure.
Now Connect your laptop and iPad to the same Musaic Demo network. Make sure that the Musaic App
can ‘see’ the Musaic Players.
The network setup is now done.
Make sure you have some music on your iPad
1. Sync your iPad to the computer on which you have iTunes and add some music content to it (or
buy content directly from the Apple iTunes store online if you prefer to do that).
2. Disconnect your iPad from iTunes. Open the Musaic App and tap the Music on iPad tab.
Make sure your music appears and has Album Art/Cover
Art. If not you can use iTunes to find cover art and add it
to your PCs library, then resync to your iPad.
Right click the album without artwork and click Get Album
Artwork.
Once you have done this re-sync your iPad to iTunes and
all the cover art should be there.
Optional (but good to do for a professional demo): Setup a DLNA/UPnP server on
your laptop so that you can play the music that is on the laptop through Musaic
Mac computers do not include a DNLA/UPnP server by default. Windows PCs do but the in-built server
cannot serve FLAC files and is not as good as some low cost servers you can download.
We particularly recommend Asset which can be downloaded here:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/asset-upnp-dlna.htm
1. Download and install the right version of Asset for your computer.
2. If you do not already have some music on your laptop create a folder for Music and drag some
good sounding music content into it.
3. Run the Asset UPnP configuration program that comes with Asset, this window will appear:
Press the Detecting Changes button - Asset will
scan your computer for music and begin to make it
available to any UPnP/DNLA compatible player on
the network.

4. Make sure the iPad is connected to the Musaic Demo network and Open the Musaic App. Press
the Players menu button and select a Player
5. Press the Musaic Libraries button
6. Press the Albums button
Your albums should appear, check that they have album art. You can now select an album and some
tracks for playback and make sure everything is working.
If you have missing album art or track information that is missing or corrupted, an excellent tool for
fixing things is mp3tag. You can download it from here: http://www.mp3tag.de/en/
Open the program and add the folder where your music is stored to it:
The easiest way to edit files is to click on Album so that the tracks are grouped into albums. Select all
the tracks for an album and now you can edit all the various metadata for a whole album or add cover
art. The program is able to lookup metadata from various databases for you, auto number tracks and
has various other useful features. Press F1 for the built in Help system.
When you have updated your metadata you can open the Asset UPnP Configuration program and press
the (Rescan Library) Detecting Changes button to get Asset to rebuild its database and pick up the new
metadata. Asset does this on its own in any case but a rescan will force Asset to do this straight away.

Setting up Spotify
All that is needed to setup Spotify is to download the App to your iPad and sign up for a Premium
account.
Although Spotify have a free (non-subscription) tier that allows playback of music from their App this
tier does not support playback to hardware devices via Spotify Connect. You must have a premium
subscription to give demo of Spotify with Musaic.
Download Spotify from here: https://www.spotify.com
Tip for larger presentations
If you have a larger audience and want everyone to be able to see the App in action, you can mirror
the iPads screen to an Apple TV connected to a suitable TV/Projector. The Musaic App will then be seen
on the TV whilst controlling audio playback on the Musaic system. The Apple TV should be connected
via Ethernet to your Airport Express, then tap the Airplay button on the iPad, select the Apple TV and
turn ‘Mirroring’ On.
