Institute of Economics

IE
Institute of Economics
IE is recognized nationally and internationally
as a school that leads economic research in
Brazil and strongly influences the debate on
national economic issues.
This high reputation is due largely to the
debates and analyses performed in its
centers. If, on one hand, IE includes new
knowledge in economic theory and applied
economics, on the other hand, its
contribution also meets the demands of both
public and private entities. It does so by
providing knowledge to help formulate,
apply and evaluate public policies and the
demands of the public at large by providing
information that can help people to
deliberate on the direction of economic
policy and national development.
The Institute also reflects the conception of
the "school of Campinas”, which has its
origins in studies conducted in the 1950s and
1960s by ECLAC , a United Nations agency
dedicated to the economic analysis in Latin
America. The legacy of the ECLAC is present
in the concern for the uniqueness of Latin
American development and is evident in the
importance attached to the discussion of the
reforms needed to overcome the structural
problems of these economies.

The Institute of Economics - IE runs the largest graduate program in
Economics in Brazil. When it was established in 1984 as an autonomous
teaching, research and extension unit, IE had already operated as a
department since the 1960s, organizing economic planning programs at
the graduate level. Currently, in addition to the undergraduate program
(implemented in 1970), IE offers master’s and PhD programs in
Economics and Economic Development.
Characterized by a pluralistic and humanistic educational approach, the
IE programs train teachers, researchers and professionals to meet the
growing needs of research institutions, the university system and the
public and private sectors. IE holds that the appropriate training of its
students requires contact with different schools of economic thought.
The Institute also seeks to familiarize students with the most abstract
theoretical considerations and the historical and political study of the
Brazilian and world economies. In addition, students are introduced to
approaches from other social sciences.
The intellectual production of IE is vast and diverse and meets different
types of demands. The traditional departmental structure is replaced at
the Institute by research centers that are responsible for nearly 30 lines
of research on topics such as economic policy and the environment;
economic development; international economic relations; trade union
studies and labor economics; agricultural economics; industrial and
technology economics; social, urban and regional economics; finance;
economic history; and econometrics .
Academic studies are disseminated in indexed journals, books, scientific
conference proceedings and articles published in newspapers and
magazines. The unit accounts for more than 100 projects conducted in
partnership with institutions in Brazil and abroad, such as the
International Labour Organization (ILO), in addition to dozens of
individual or team studies conducted with its own resources.
The international participation of IE is evident in the participation of
faculty and students in cooperation agreements for exchange activities
with several universities from foreign countries, such as Germany,
China, South Korea, Spain, the USA, France, England and virtually all
countries in Latin America.
The unit is also a benchmark with regard to the extension program,
which offers courses in economics and business administration, in
addition to a specialization program in Labor Economics and Trade
Unionism that is mainly aimed at union leaders and professionals from
government agencies.
