Oldfield School is a state primary school set in a mainly middle class area with some council accommodation. There is an interesting ethnic mix, representing many different cultures and faiths. The school is a single storey building set in the middle of playfields and playgrounds. It comprises a hall, seven classrooms, two library areas and seven small teaching rooms for groups/individuals. The school is heavily oversubscribed, currently taking only from the catchment area. It has 245 pupils aged from 4 to 11 years arranged in seven chronologically grouped classes. There is currently a staff of 41 working at the school. There are 5 children with a Statement for Special Educational Needs. They are brought to school by their parents and do not have particular transport needs. The school expanded to include an extra 30 children in September 2012 and will take a further extra 30 the following year with a planned move to a new site from September 2014. Where is Oldfield? The school address is Chiltern Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, SL6 1XA. A map showing the location of the school and its catchment area is attached here. Please note that Oldfield School is number 19 on the map. Page 2 The School Day The start and finish times of the main school day are 8.50 am until 3.20 pm. The school also runs a Breakfast Club which operates from 8 am until the start of school and caters for between 20 and 30 children each day. There is also an After School club at Oldfield run by Wise Owls which operates from 3.20 pm until 6.15 pm. It caters for 60-75 children each day, including children from other local schools such as Larchfield, St Luke’s, Holyport, St Edmund Campion, Burchetts Green and Knowl Hill. These children are collected from their schools and delivered to Oldfield by minibus. There are 3 minibuses each carrying 17 people. Children are picked up by their parents. Extra Curriculum Activities The school also operates a range of extra curriculum activities before and after school. These can be viewed in detail here: Extra Curriculum Activities 2012-13.doc Page 3 CURRENT SITUATION TRAVEL TO SCHOOL – ANNUAL SURVEYS Percentage of Pupils February 2013 Walk How did you travel to school 37% today? It is likely this drop is due to the colder and wetter weather in February. It is encouraging to see that the numbers coming by bike/scooter has remained the same. We will repeat the travel survey in May ’13 so that direct comparison with previous surveys is possible. Additional Comments Page 6 ISSUES WE WANT TO RESOLVE The only way in and out of the estate where Oldfield is located is along Chiltern Road. This results in a bottleneck of traffic at the end of the day as cars try to turn out of Chiltern Road on to the busy Bray Road. There is a small staff car park but no parking on the school grounds for parents. Parents therefore park in Chiltern Road and along the front of the school. At the end of the day there is considerable congestion outside the school on both sides of the road. Despite regular reminders from the school, parents still sometimes park on the zigzag lines either side of the main gate as well as on the corners of nearby side roads and blocking driveways. There are regular complaints from local residents about inconsiderate parking. The school is not on a bus route and this does not provide a viable travel to school option. It is likely that congestion and parking problems around the school will increase with the school expansion from September 2012 onwards. Parents who are new to the school will need to be introduced to our School Travel Plan and involved in efforts to reduce congestion and parking problems. Page 7 CURRENT ACHIEVEMENTS Oldfield School was awarded the Gold Step Award in June 2010 for initiatives to encourage children to walk to school and improve parking and congestion. Oldfield also received an award for Most Innovative Project for holding an INSET day to encourage other schools to use local educational amenities. In 2010 the School Council initiated and carried out a ‘protest’ outside the school against inconsiderate parking. They designed and made their own placards. The School Council continue to be actively involved in the School Travel Plan. All children in Years 5 and 6 participate in the Bikeability scheme each year. KS1 pupils participated in Scooter Wise training in 2012. The school participates in the annual national Walk to School week as well the local STaRs scheme. Children from the School Council are responsible for running the STaRs scheme. It was very encouraging to see from the Parents’ Questionnaire that 80% of the school population participates in the STaRs scheme. Children in KS1 receive road safety education as part of the PSHE curriculum. Regular reminders about considerate and safe parking are included in newsletters to parents. This is also discussed at meetings for new parents and is included in their welcome pack. Cycle racks have been installed and are full every day with both cycles and scooters. Each September, all Year 1 children are given a road safety magazine and a reflector for their book-bag provided by Nationwide. In May 2012, Oldfield School was runner up in the RBWM Walk to School week and we were rewarded with a road safety performance by the Momo Theatre Group. Patrick Romaya of Bike It gave a presentation to the School Council (Jan 13) and to the whole school in an assembly (Feb 13) to encourage children to ride their bikes to school. Further activities to follow. Page 8 OBJECTIVES Our aim is to educate children in the benefits of walking to school as part of a healthy lifestyle. We also aim to reduce congestion and parking problems around the school. TARGETS Our target is to maintain a level of 33% car use and 67% either walking or cycling to school over the next 2 years. This is a realistic target bearing in mind the current levels already achieved and the possible impact of the proposed school expansion from September 2012 onwards.
