ASSOCIATED STUDENT GOVERNMENT
AGENDA
October 13th, 2008 (6th Meeting)
I. Call to Order 7:02 p.m.
II. Pledge of Allegiance
III. Roll Call
IV. Approval of Minutes
V. Guest Speakers
A. Patrick Rose, State Representative:
 The most important job of the State Representative
for San Marcos is to wake up and fight the legislation
for Texas State. Over the last six years, we changed
the name to Texas State University, deregulated
tuition in 2003, and the Rose Amendment created
scholarships at the university. We have to have an
increase in investment, and we need to re-regulate
tuition and the state needs to fund it. The Student
Regent Bill was finally passed and a student was put
on the Board of Regents in 2005, but he or she do not
have a voting position and next session that needs to
be a commitment. 2 million dollars funded for the
nursing school that will start in 2010.
 Executive Questions:
1. What is one of main goals? Next session is to
fund a Fine Arts center on campus as well as
making the surplus that we have as a state and
re-regulating tuition.
2. Where does financing higher education stand in
priorities? Our economy isn’t strong now but it
can be if we try hard enough.
3. Extending bar hours- however the referendum
goes, that is what he will support.

Senator Questions
1. Career Politician? When you sign to run up for
office you become a politician. Legislation has
always been successful and never been an issue.
The partisanship has always been a problem and
has always driven a ditch between the two
parties, and he thinks that that is something that
will not work in the long run. (Senator
Domaschk)
2. Other plans for the community- Proposition 15
puts Texas ahead of all other states and 3 billion
dollars into cancer research. Roads are also
another priority and a railway. Having ‘Made in
Texas’ written on the label to help the economy
(Senator Hernandez).
3. Why should majority of Texans that will not go
to college pay for our tuition? Every student
deserves to have the opportunity to go to college
and also our economy suffers when we don’t
have college graduates. (Senator Guzman)
4. In what way do you side with the conservative
republican? Doctors were having a hard time
paying practice rates and others and supported
bills that went against the democratic view and
although it was said that it would end his career
he voted that way to better the community.
B. Daniel McCarthy, candidate for San Marcos Mayor
 Has big ideas for the city. First and biggest issue is
the solar panels to install on wastewater and if we can
bring the price down by half. Raise utility rates by $1
and that would give $200,000 to put up solar panels.
Next issue to take from savings- bike lanes are needed
and some railroad ties will be very cheap considering
the money we’d be saving. Bicycle lanes need to be
put in for safety. Code to say who can live in a house
is ridiculous.
 Executive Questions
1. Opinion on extending alcohol service hours?
TABC is looking over the shoulder of the bar
owners already, the city of the San Marcos

should at least follow suit with the rest of the
state.
2. Relationship of the city and the university? It is
strained – othewise they wouldn’t be policing the
neighborhoods.
3. Envision the economic growth of SM? Less
retail and more high paying jobs which means
recruiting more employers and giving tax
abatements. Also a green initiative would help to
bring in other businesses.
Senator Questions
1. Quality of water? We need to start taking some
of our own water from the aquifer and not from
Canyon Lake and also take the Fluoride out of it
(Senator Greene)
2. City Council meetings? Can they be changed
from spring break? Yes he’ll work on it.
(Senator Fite)
3. Platform? Bridging the gap between students
and the city. Bike lanes, solar panels, etc.
(Senator Hernandez)
4. If planning on starting the adult life, are you
prepared? Legally, yes, I am qualified, but no
one can say for sure whether or not all of his/her
ideas can work. Getting involved in the
neighborhoods. (Senator Domaschk)
5. How do you appeal to the rest of the community
that’s not involved in the university? Speaking
for low income families, and revitalizing of
existing infrastructures (Senator Ferreira)
