The Stags are 2-0 on the young season, while the Big Red are looking for their first win, at 0-2. The Series: Fairfield and Cornell are meeting for the third time and for the first time on the Stags home floor. Both squads have earned a win in the series, with the Big Red winning the last meeting, 58-54 on December 1, 2008. Fairfield’s victory in the series came on December 7, 1996, 73-57, at a neutral site. Hot Topics z Katelyn Linney became the third Stag in five seasons to reach 30 points in a game on Friday night z Fairfield is 2-0 to open a season for the seventh time in program history and for the third time in four season under Joe Frager z The Stags are now 13-4 in the month of November under Frager z Fairfield is 496-361 at the Division I level all-time (30th season) and is 565-434 in its varsity history z The Stags have hit more three pointers in each game (8) then total free throws this season (7) The Varsity Stags: Fairfield began playing varsity women’s basketball for the 1974-75 season at the Division III level. That squad, under coach Gary Dittrich, posted a perfect season, going 16-0. Fairfield elevated the program to the Division II level for the 1979-80 campaign and hired the program’s longest tenured coach Dianne Nolan. After two Division II seasons, Fairfield made the move to Division I for the 1981-82 season and joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. All told, the Stags have played 999 varsity games, winning 565 of those contests. Fairfield has won three MAAC Regular Season Championships, three MAAC Tournament Championships and played in a national postseason tournament on six occasions. Three of those appearances - one NCAA, a WNIT and WBI - have been of the at-large variety. Scouting Cornell: Cornell is 0-2 on the year, having fallen at home to Cleveland State (65-50) in the opener and on the road to Syracuse (86-45) on Monday night. The Big Red are shooting 33 percent from the floor, 31.4 from behind the arc, and are being outrebounded by 14.5 boards per game. Cornell has 29 assists on 33 made field goals, but has a 0.5 assist-to-turnover ratio and are -7.0 in turnover margin. Clare Fitzpatrick and Shelby Lyman enter Friday’s game with 16 points apiece, to lead Cornell. Allie Munson has eight points this season and is averaging a team-best 5.5 rebounds. Taylor Flynn leads the team with seven assists, while Lyman has six. All told, nine of 12 players that have seen action this season have at least one assist. Last Time Out: Katelyn Linney hit 10-12 from the field, including seven three-pointers, to lead the Stags to a 54-37 victory over George Mason. Fairfield’s defense turned the tide around halftime, including holding Mason to 0-9 from the floor and scoreless for over four minutes to start the second-half. The Stags shot 43.8 percent from the field and were good on 811 from behind the arc in the contest, while holding Mason to 27.6 percent, and just 6-30 in the second-half. The Stags out rebounded George Mason, 39-36, with Laura Vetra pulled down a game-high seven boards. Fairfield did commit 20 turnovers on the night, but forced 15 turnovers from the Patriots, and held Mason to 27.6 percent shooting. Coming Up: Fairfield wraps up its four-game season opening homestand on Monday when it hosts Rhode Island at 7 p.m. The Stags then head out on the road for four games, beginning on November 28 at Lafayette. The road trip will take Fairfield to Villanova on December 2, Hofstra on December 5, and Columbia on December 9. After a 10-day lay-off for final exams, the Stags play their final two non-conference home games of the season on December 19, St. Francis (NY), and December 22, Albany. Game Three vs. Cornell Hot Starts: The Stags best start to a season was a 7-0 start in the 1983-84 season, the only other time that the team has opened a campaign with four consecutive home wins. The Stags had wins over Boston College, Connecticut, seton Hall and Wisconsin during that stretch. Fairfield began the 2007-08 season, Joe Frager’s first at the helm, with five consecutive victories. Stags At Alumni Hall z Fairfield has won nearly 76 percent of its 283 all-time game at Alumni Hall, posting a 215-68 record in the on campus facility z The Stags have won six straight games at Alumni Hall, dating back to the final four games last season z Joe Frager is 20-4 in his three seasons in the building z The Stags are playing 12 games at Alumni Hall this season, and are 2-0 in those games thus far Team Defense: Fairfield has held its first two opponents to 30.6 percent shooting from the field and 42.5 points per game - both leading the league through games of Tuesday night. The Stags have not allowed an opposing player to reach double-digits in either of the games. More impressive is the Stags holding opponents to just 2-15 from behind the arc, which includes an 0-7 effort by George Mason. The Stags have forced 28 turnovers in the two games, with 12 steals. Helping Out: Fairfield has converted 48 field goals this season, and have recorded an assist on 62.5 percent (30) of those field goals. Leading the way is Desiree Pina who has handed out 10 assists. Eight players have contributed at least one assist, with Taryn Johnson second on the team with six assists. Board Wards: Fairfield has won the battle of the boards in each of its first two outings and are a league-leading +13 on the glass. The STags are averaging 41.5 rebounds a game, while opponents are averaging 35.0 a contest, for a MAACleading rebounding margin of +6.5. Fairfield Game Notes Upcoming Career Milestones Pina needs 9 points for 700 Linney needs 14 points for 400 Linney needs 14 rebounds for 100 Johnson needs 24 assists for 100 Behind The Arc: Fairfield has hit eight three-pointers in each of its two games this season, shooting 16-26 (61.5%) from behind the arc. The Stags post players are 7-11 on the year from downtown, 63.6 percent, with four players of 6-foot or taller having connected on at least one Katelyn Linney has three-pointer. knocked down 9-12 from downtown this season, and her 75 percent success rate is third in the league and tops among those who have taken two or more shots from behind the arc. Back-tto-B Back At Home: For just the sixth time in the team’s Division I history the Stags are opening with back-to-back home games. The last time the team played its first two games at home was in 2006-07, when the team lost to Richmond and Villanova. Three previous seasons the Stags have opened the season at home with a win, the last coming in 1993, when Fairfield defeated Brown 85-81 in overtime in the opener, before falling to Seton Hall 79-61. Fairfield plays its first four games at Alumni Hall this season. That has happened only once before, 1983-84, when the Stags won all four games, including a 92-72 win over Boston College and a 72-43 victory over Connecticut. Giving It Up: Fairfield has committed more turnovers and more fouls than both George Mason and Quinnipiac, but have outscored the two foes by 34 total points. The Stags turned the ball over 20 times on Monday, after committing 13 against Quinnipiac. Fairfield was whistled for 18 fouls in the opener and 13 more against Mason. Free Throw Woes: Fairfield shot 66.2 percent from the free throw line last season, 317-479, and are not off to a good start at the line this season. The Stags are 7-17 at the stripe, 41.2 percent. Fairfield went 3-10 against Quinnipiac and then were 4-7 against George Mason. Only three Stags have made a free throw in the first two games, three each from Taryn Johnson (3-8) and Katelyn Linney (3-4), and Laura Vetra (12). Career-O Opening Nights: For the fourth time in as many years the Stags received career-high scoring efforts in a season opening win. Joelle Nawrocki equaled her career-high with 15 points to lead the team in scoring. In each of the team’s season debut’s under the tutelage of Joe Frager, the team’s leading scorer has tallied a career-high. Katelyn Linney, in her collegiate debut a season ago, scored 18 points, to lead Fairfield to a win over Rhode Island. Hot Shots: The Stags enter tonight’s game as the top shooting offense in the league. Fairfield has hit 45.3 percent of its shot from the floor this year, knocking down 48-106. From behind the arc, Fairfield is even more accurate, hitting 16-126, 61.5 percent. Opening At Home: The Stags contest with Quinnipiac was the first season opening home game since falling 58-49 to Richmond on November 11, 2006. It was also just the eighth time in 30 Division I seasons that the Stags have opened a season at home. With the victory the Stags are 4-4 when opening a season at home, and are 4-1 in those games played at Alumni Hall. Chasing 1,000: Junior Desiree Pina will look to become just the 24th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points this season. She has scored 691 points over the course of her 67 career games. The Stags have had a member of each of the last three graduating classing score 1,000 points in a career. She needs to average just over 11 points per game to reach the 1,000 point mark this season. Fast Start Frager: Joe Frager is in his fourth season at the helm of the Stags and his 13th at the collegiate level and opening day has been good to his squads. He is the only coach in Fairfield varsity history to win his opening game each of his first four seasons at the helm of the team. Frager coached teams are now 12-1 in the season opener and he has won 11 straight opening games entering today’s contest. Game Three vs. Cornell Preseason Awards: Juniors Taryn Johnson and Desiree Pina and sophomore Katelyn Linney were all selected by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) head coaches to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. Pina, the team’s leading returning scorer, was voted to the second team, after earning All-MAAC Third Team accolades following her sophomore season. The league leader in minutes played, Pina averaged 12.1 points per game a season ago while also handing out a team-best 98 assists. Johnson and Linney were both selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team by the league’s coaches. Johnson is the Stags top returning rebounder, 6.9 per game, and shot blocker, swatting 53 shots a season ago. Linney, a 2010 All-MAAC Rookie Team selection, averaged 10.2 points per game during her rookie season, including knocking down a teambest 68 three-pointers. Team Captains: Fairfield will have three team captains this season, as senior Kelly Romano and juniors Sarah Paulus and Desiree Pina were selected to the position by their teammates. Lanky Laura: Laura Vetra made her first collegiate start against Quinnipiac and played a career-high 31 minutes. She hit 5-13 from the field, including her first career three-pointer, to tally a dozen points. Vetra corralled a game-high eight rebounds, half on the offensive glass, while blocking two shots and handing out two assists. Successful Debut: Rookie Katie Cizynski played only seven minutes in her collegiate debut, but took full advantage of the time she saw on the floor. She shot 3-4 from the field, including a three-point field goal, to finish with seven points. Deja ‘vu All Over Again: Joelle Nawrocki equaled her career-high of 15 points, six field goals and three three-point field goals in the Stags season opening win. The line is identical to the first start of her career, last December 3 versus Mount St. Mary’s. when she first notched the career marks. Preseason Pick’em: The Stags were voted fourth in the MAAC Preseason Fairfield Game Notes Coaches Poll, which was announced on October 26 at the league’s annual Basketball Media Day, this year hosted at B.B. King’s House of Blues in New York City. Fairfield earned 64 points in the poll, while Marist College was the unanimous pick to win the league. Iona College earned 90 points to be picked second, while Loyola University Maryland earned 70 points to finish third in the poll. Manhattan College also picked up 64 points, to tie with the Stags, and were followed by Niagara University (51), Canisius College (44), Siena College (34), Saint Peter’s College (20) and Rider University (13). Brothers & Sister: Sophomore Sarah Paulus is the seventh child of Denise and Dave Paulus and completes an impressive run for the family. All seven children have played athletically at the Division I level. Her brother Greg, who played four seasons of basketball at Duke, one season of football at Syracuse. Her brother Mike is currently a quarterback at William & Mary. Sarah’s father, Dave, started the trend from 1971-74 as a basketball player at John Carroll University, and add to that Sarah’s sister-in-law, Kelly, who played soccer at Georgetown from 1997-99. The Fairfield Family: Rookie Katie Cizynski is new to Fairfield, but the family name is already in the Stags record books. her father, Joe, is the only Fairfield baseball player in history to throw a nine-inning no-hitter.
