AIC Round 7
It was again an involved week of sport with numerous teams
searching for positions on premiership tables. After last
weekend’s matches, all our AFL junior teams have qualified for
the final weekend fixtures.
Our sailing teams completed their team racing season with the
Black team gaining 2nd place behind Brisbane Grammar in Gold
Division and the White team winning Silver Division.
In volleyball, our teams won 16 of the 19 matches against St
Patrick’s while our cricketers went 15 wins and 9 losses.
The final round against St Laurence’s will be a wonderful event to
complete the summer season of sport. They are respected rivals,
and all teams will need to be “on their game” to achieve desired
results.

On Tuesday 14 March, the Iona College Year 6 AFL team
participated in the AFLQ Schools Cup Gala Day at Coorparoo
Football Club. The competition consisted of two pools of five
teams, with the winners of each pool progressing to the final.
The team played St Edward’s and St Elizabeth’s in the morning
games, picking up comfortable wins in both games. In the third
round of matches, the team came up against Bayview State
School. This proved to be a much tougher test for the team, but
after trailing at half time the boys finished strongly to win by four
points. In the final pool match the team had another strong
performance, defeating St Anthony’s by four goals.
The strong performances throughout the pool matches meant
the boys qualified for the final, where they were drawn against St
Laurence’s. After a tough first half which saw us trailing by three
points, the boys again kicked home and took the win by 11
points. By winning the gala day, the team has qualified for the
next phase of the School’s Cup Competition, to be held later in
the year.
A big thank you to
all the parents
who came out to
support. Thanks

The Sports Department is accepting nominations for

A great final week of Fleet Racing for Iona. TSS won the series
overall, but our lads have improved greatly over the term and are
now genuine mid fleet contenders.
Thank you to Gerry Deakin, who generously comes out to coach
our boys every Sunday morning. Your assistance is greatly
appreciated.
Next weekend Iona will compete in the Queensland Pacer Fleet
Championships. Good luck to these boys. Our Team Sailors also
had another successful weekend. Iona Black were runners up in
the Gold Pool and Iona White finished first in the Silver pool.
Congratulations to our Team Sailors.
A special thank you to John Meehan (Fleet Manager) and Ben
Palmer (Teams Manager) - your assistance each week is
invaluable. Iona Sailing is very fortunate to have a number of
parents and Old Boys who generously give their time each week.
Without your help, Iona would not be able to run such a
successful school sailing programme. Many thanks to all
involved.
Sport Supporters (canteen help required)
The Sport Supporters need volunteers on Saturday
mornings throughout the volleyball season in the canteen.
This Saturday, parents of Years 7 - 9 boys are asked to
assist. Please sign up for a time that suits you on the link
below.

Football and Rugby Canteen Supervisors Needed
Next term we commence Rugby and Football. Sport Supporters
are looking for Supervisors from the Years 5 to 8 families for the
rugby and football canteens during Term 2 home fixtures. There
are five Saturdays which the supervisors will be required - April
22, April 29, May 6, May 27 and June 3. The supervisors will
need to be there from 6.30am to approximately 1.00pm. This
can be split between two people, e.g. 6.30am – 10.00am and
10.00am – 1.00pm. Volunteers will be there to help during this
time and Sports Supporters Ros (Rugby) and Julie (Football) will
be there to open up with you, answer any questions and show
you what needs to be done.
These canteens are an essential part of Iona Sports. Without the
assistance and commitment of canteen supervisors, the canteens
cannot open for the Years 5 to 8 home games.
Please confirm your offer of assistance or discuss any queries you
may have with Julie Dayton, Sport Supporters’ Convenor. Julie
can be contacted after 5.00pm Monday to Friday or anytime at
the weekend on 0417 921 687.
Thank you for your contribution to the success of the Iona winter
sports program.
