KS1 SPORT: Boccia Session Objectives: 1. To prepare the children for the Boccia event in their School Sports Day 2. Develop the children’s ability to aim a ball at a target Session 5 Equipment: Beanbags; Marker Cones; Chairs Session Overview • • • The aim of this session is to prepare the children for the Boccia event they will be participating in during the School Olympics The children need to be taught how to play the game and the rules of Boccia The children should be introduced to the concept of ‘Aiming’ – sending an object towards a target Theme Timing 5 Mins 10 Mins Introduction to Boccia Session Part Warm Up Skill Development Content Coaching Points Get the Arms Loose: 9 • Ask the children to spread out and each find a space. The children should jog on the spot. • Whilst jogging on the spot perform the following actions: - Punch the air in front of them - Punch the air high above their heads - Ask the children to stand still and perform arm circles on the spot – Starting small and gradually increasing in size - Repeat circling the arms backwards Underarm Throw • • • • The children work on their own with 1 beanbag each Step out 40 by 40 step areas for the children to work in Each child moves around their area performing a small underarm throw with their beanbag, following it and picking it up The children should keep moving around the area performing small throws and collecting their beanbags Risk Assessment Ensure the area and equipment is checked, appropriate and safe to use. Follow school PE policy and procedures 9 Image Keep jogging on the spot whilst performing the actions Listen carefully and follow instructions 9 9 9 9 9 9 Gradually increase the intensity of the activity Keep the throwing arm straight Swing the arm back Swing the arm forwards; keeping it straight Release the beanbag as the arm moves past the body Move quickly to collect your beanbag Progression • • The children work in pairs with 1 beanbag between them Standing 4 ‐ 5 steps apart in a space and throw the beanbag back and forth using an underarm throw Hoop Shot • • • 10 Mins Activity • • • • The children are to work in pairs Each child needs a beanbag and marker spot and each pair a hoop The children should place their hoop on the floor and stand opposite each other on their marker spots next to the hoop They must then take turns to throw their beanbag into the hoop If they are successful they then take one step back moving their marker spot The aim is to get as far away from the hoop as possible If they fail to get the beanbag in the hoop they must try again from that distance until they are successful Boccia This is an opportunity to introduce the game of Boccia and allow the children to practice in preparation for their School Olympics 15 Mins Game • • • • • • Split the class into groups of 5 Each child requires 2 beanbags that are the same colour. Each child in a group should have different coloured beanbags Each group requires an area to play in (as shown in the diagram) with a chair and marker cone The aim is to throw the beanbags as close as possible to the maker cone The closest beanbag to the marker after everyone has thrown theirs wins the leg The children should take turns to throw their beanbags one at a time 9 Use an underarm throw 9 Aim towards your hoop 9 Keep eyes on the target 9 Encourage and highlight the use of good throwing technique 9 Encourage and highlight the use of good technique 9 Aim throws at the marker cone Rules: 1. Throws must be made from the chair 2. One shot at a time – children take turns • sat in the chair The children should keep playing legs against the rest of their group Progression 3. Nearest beanbag to marker cone wins leg = 1 point 4. Throws must be underarm • • Once the children understand the game, introduce a scoring system Children continue to play legs in their groups ‐ the nearest beanbag in each legs wins 1 point • Keep playing the game keeping score Tall, Wide and Small Stretches • 2 Mins Warm Down • • 2 Mins Plenary Ask the children to find a space to stand in so they can see you at the front of the class Ask the children to copy the actions as you perform them at the front of the class: ‐ Tall Stretch ‐ Wide Stretch ‐ Small Stretch Repeat each stretch 2 or 3 times 9 Hold still in each stretch 9 Hold the stretch for 10 seconds 9 All count to 10 whilst holding the stretch Discuss the techniques used in all the events and highlight the key points for each
