Colleges and universities promote high levels of student achievement by emphasizing the importance of academic effort and setting high expectations for student performance. 2013 Assessment Symposium Active and Collaborative Learning (ACL) 8 Students learn more when they are intensely involved in their education and asked to think about what they are learning in different settings. Collaborating with others in solving problems or mastering difficult material prepares students for the messy, unscripted problems they will encounter daily during and after college. 2013 Assessment Symposium Student-Faculty Interaction (SFI) 9 Students learn firsthand how experts think about and solve practical problems by interacting with faculty members inside and outside the classroom. As a result, their teachers become role models, mentors, and guides for continuous, life-long learning. 2013 Assessment Symposium Enriching Educational Experiences (EEE) 10 Complementary learning opportunities enhance academic programs. Diversity experiences teach students valuable things about themselves and others. Technology facilitates collaboration between peers and instructors. Internships, community service, and senior capstone courses provide opportunities to integrate and apply knowledge. 2013 Assessment Symposium Supportive Campus Environment (SCE) Students perform better and are more satisfied at colleges that are committed to their success and cultivate positive working and social relations among different groups on campus. 11 2013 Assessment Symposium Variation within CSU’s NSSE Scores In summary, there is not much variation in the benchmark averages across firstgeneration, Pell-recipient, or minority status. 12 2013 Assessment Symposium CSU’s NSSE Scores over Time CSU has participated in the NSSE survey eight times. The benefit of having multiple NSSE administrations is that longitudinal trends in NSSE responses at CSU can be explored. 13 2013 Assessment Symposium Summary of CSU’s NSSE Scores over Time 2012 Change from 2007 14 FirstYear Senior Level of Academic Challenge (LAC) + + Active and Collaborative Learning (ACL) + + Student Faculty Interaction (SFI) + = Enriching Educational Experiences (EEE) + = Supportive Campus Environment (SCE) + + 2013 Assessment Symposium In a typical week, how manyyou hours do you spend preparing for class Overall, how would evaluate the quality of How much does your school emphasize providing (studying, reading, writing, doing homework or lab work, analyzing data, academic advising you received at your the support you to help you succeed rehearsing, andneed other have academic activities)?
