Flying Start Flying Start 1 Flying Start • Based on the EPPE project research (Effective Provision of Pre-school Education) it was found that an early start for children in preschool before the age of three, is linked to better intellectual attainment and improved social relationships with peers at age three. (Particularly in disadvantaged areas) Flying Start The Aim of Flying Start: ‘Is to improve the child’s outcomes, both in preparation for school and in the long term.’ (Welsh Assembly) ... Research has shown that there is concern about some of our very young children being unable to make the most of the experiences on offer to them when they first enter education. 3 Flying Start Why is Flying Start Needed? In the ‘Summary Report of Survey into Young Children’s Skills on Entry to Education 2002’ (Basic Skills) it states ‘Whilst the survey did not involve any objective assessment of children’s skills, it is clear from the responses of teachers that there is a very real concern that the level of skills of many children when they start school puts them at a disadvantage and prevents them from making the most of their schooling. Worryingly, many teachers feel the problem is worse now than it was five years ago.’ 4 Flying Start Flying Start, which is a Government funded initiative proposes to achieve this aim by providing: • Quality Childcare. • Additional Health Team Support. • Basic skills , LAP / NAP, Book Start, Wrexham’s ‘Let’s Play Pack’ • Parenting Programmes 5 Flying Start The Flying Start Quality Childcare Learning Framework states that: ‘The main focus should be on developing children’s personal and social skills, emotional and physical wellbeing, communication skills, and positive dispositions.’ 6 Flying Start • Childcare is provided for 42 weeks of the year (3 of these weeks being in the school holidays) • The sessions last 2.5 hours per day, 5 days of the week • Each setting is led by a supervisor, qualified to at least Level 3 in childcare • Each setting is supported by a qualified teacher Flying Start 8 Flying Start Flying Start emphasises that there should be: • A focus on the needs of the child starting with what he knows and can do. • An understanding that play is children’s work, as this is how they learn and develop. • Close relationships between the setting, staff and parents. • Support for children and families during the initial transition from home to setting. 9 Flying Start 10 Flying Start • The need for staff who know and understand the children well. • A welcoming environment where children feel valued and respected. • Space , inside and outside to allow children to develop at their own pace. • Time for children to investigate, experiment and re-do activities. 11 Flying Start 12 Flying Start 13 Flying Start 14 Flying Start 15 Flying Start 16 Flying Start 17 Flying Start 18 Flying Start 19 Flying Start 20 Flying Start 21 Flying Start 22 Flying Start 23
