• Based on the EPPE project research (Effective
Provision of Pre-school Education) it was
found that an early start for children in preschool before the age of three, is linked to
better intellectual attainment and improved
social relationships with peers at age three.
(Particularly in disadvantaged areas)

The Aim of Flying Start:
‘Is to improve the child’s outcomes, both in
preparation for school and in the long
term.’ (Welsh Assembly) ...
Research has shown that there is concern about some
of our very young children being unable to make the
most of the experiences on offer to them when they first
enter education.

Why is Flying Start Needed?
In the ‘Summary Report of Survey into Young Children’s
Skills on Entry to Education 2002’ (Basic Skills) it states
‘Whilst the survey did not involve any objective assessment of
children’s skills, it is clear from the responses of teachers that
there is a very real concern that the level of skills of many
children when they start school puts them at a disadvantage
and prevents them from making the most of their schooling.
Worryingly, many teachers feel the problem is worse now than
it was five years ago.’

Flying Start emphasises that there
should be:
• A focus on the needs of the child starting with what he
knows and can do.
• An understanding that play is children’s work, as this is
how they learn and develop.
• Close relationships between the setting, staff and
parents.
• Support for children and families during the initial
transition from home to setting.
