Game Description

Red Dead Redemption is a 3rd person open
world game that takes place in the early
1900’s when the Western Frontier is starting to
die. You take control of John Marston, an exgang member turned family man. You will
travel from the Northern Wilderness to the
Mexican desert trying to save your family. The
game is available for the Sony PlayStation 3
as well as the Microsoft Xbox 360. It may have
been released for PC but Rockstar was not
planning on the game to have as much
success as it did.
Main Character

( Information from
http://reddead.wikia.com/wiki/John_Marston as well as
personal knowledge )

John Marston was born in 1873. His mother, a prostitute,
died during childbirth. His father was in illiterate Scottish
immigrant. His father was blind in both eyes from a bar fight
in Chicago, and was later killed in another bar fight in 1881.
John ( 8 at the time ) was sent to an orphanage where he
lived until 1890. John joined Dutch van der Linde’s gang
with his wife, were he remained until 1906 when he is shot in
a failed robbery and left for dead. He then leaves his
outlaw life with wife Abigail and an unnamed daughter
(Who died before you start playing) John purchases a
ranch in Beecher’s Hope to start his new life.
What is the goal ?

The overall goal of the game is to save your family. Before you start controlling
Marston, your family (Wife, Son, and “Uncle”) You arrive in the small town of
Armadillo to look for information on the 3 men you must hunt and kill. The
government has kidnapped your family to force you into hunting down 3
former gang members of yours, Dutch van der Linde, Bill Williamson and Javier
Escuella. Over the course of the game you do so, and you will receive your
family back. You then to continue to run your ranch for some missions, only to
be killed by the army when they storm your home. The game then advances
3 years to 1914, where John’s widow Abigail has died of an unknown disease.
You then play as Jack, the son of John and Abigail. There is one side mission
where you hunt down Edgar Ross, the man responsible for kidnapping you
and also the murder of John. You will find him hunting on the Mexican border
area, where you kill him without mercy in a duel.

Characters

Starting with the main character, working our way down.

John Marston was 37-38 years old when he was murdered. He was roughly 5”10, and a white
male. John was very nice to women, at one point even pistol whipping his friend Irish to
protect 2 nuns he was holding up. Although he “Transformed” himself from outlaw to
rancher, John retained his skills of Marksmanship, survivalist, hunter and more.

Dutch van der Linde was the leader of the leader of the infamous Dutch’s Gang. He was like
a Robin Hood to start, stealing from people who too much and giving to the people who
had nothing. He later turned into a killing machine who could hit your binoculars from 100
metres away, at a 70 degree angle, with wind, gravity and snow in his way, all with a pistol.
Not much else is known about Dutch, although he was claimed to have died in a fire in 1906
after a botched robbery.

Javier Escuella went to America to join a gang, and he did. He joined Dutch’s Gang along
side Marston. When Dutch went insane and the gang disbanded, Javier took it hard. He
went back to Mexico to work as a hitman for Allende, another reason Marston is sent to kill
him. Not much else is known about Javier, however he speaks English very well with little to
no Mexican Accent

Bill Williamson started his own gang in Fort Mercer after the Dutch gang split up. He is
responsible for having his men shoot Marston. Not much is known, other than he is a coward
and is not educated much at all.
Minorities

The Minorities in Read Dead Redemption is mainly
Outlaws or Bandits. They are treated as mortal
enemies, and are often seen riding into town on
horseback shooting guns. Throughout the game
you are going after Outlaws for some reason or
another. Law enforcement are often asking you
for help, so they are not discriminated as much.
However, a shop keep from the town of Armadillo
is the most racist and conceding man ever.
Whenever you enter his shop, he’s either insulting
the Jews or the blacks for some reason or another.
Women
 Women
in the game are portrayed as the
one who has to take care of the kids,
farm, horses and food. Men are out
hunting, shooting and drinking. They are
not treated as slaves, as many men
actually do care for them. They are also
never seen as outlaws, perhaps due to
their low strength.
Men

Men are outlaws and bandits. Often seen in bars or
brothels, walking around drunk in the town streets or sitting
in the local brothel drinking even more. You play as a man
throughout the game, however woman do play as a large
role in the game. A woman is the person who saves you in
the beginning of the game when you are shot outside Fort
Mercer. Playing the game as John and Jack, when you
press O on PlayStation or B on Xbox, the player will tip their
hat to women, and compliment them. However, some men
in the game are the complete opposite. For example, one
of the reoccurring random events is in the small town of
Armadillo, where a man is standing over a prostitute on the
deck of the bar with a knife. You have the option of tying
the man up, or killing him with a weapon. The women then
thanks you, as long as you save her before she is killed, and
says “I wish all men were as nice as you”
Homophobia and Disabilities

The game has no homophobia I can find, and with the
main character I would be quite shocked if there was. John
is a very nice person, unless you threaten his family or
innocent women. The only person in the game who is
homophobic is Herbert Moon. He is the perfect example of
an American in that time period. Hates the Jews, The Gays,
the blacks and everything in between. Although he seems
to be less racist towards the Mexicans, although sometimes
he hints towards them being job stealing bandits.

Disabled people are the same, there are none that you
ever encounter. Although a few are mentioned throughout
the game, they are nameless and never seen.
Violence

Violence in Red Dead Redemption can range
from Mario Kart to All out war. Even with the
missions that require you to kill lots of people,
the game overall is not shoot this and then
shoot that violence. You can simply play the
game where you just ride around hunting, or
simply just go shoot everyone you see in the
face. Although most missions require some
sort of violence, the game overall can be
played any way you wish.
Positive Messages

The game does push on being friendly to
women, as well as children. You are
encouraged to not kill innocent people,
because if you do kill someone, you gain a
bounty, and you lose fame and honor. Losing
fame causes people to not notice you, and
you lose special privileges, such as discounts
in stores. Losing honor cause people to shut
their stores down to you, running away and
sometimes even trying to shoot you if they feel
threatened.
Negative Messages
 The
most negative message in the game
is no doubt the achievement you receive
for hogtying a women, placing her on the
train tracks and watching as she is
squished. R* received lots of criticism for
this, almost as much as the Hot Coffee
modification for San Andreas. The rest of
the game however tries to teach morals.
Age
I
started playing this game when I was 11,
and I feel that’s an appropriate age as
the game is not as violent as something
like Call Of Duty or GTA. If parents don’t
wish for their children to run around doing
missions where you kill someone, then
they can simply let their child go hunting
in the North for Grizzly.
Video Game Addiction

Video games are very easily to become addicted
to. Some people say they aren’t addictive at all,
but that’s not true. Maybe for them they can
choose to stop playing whenever. However, for
some people, they literally have to be pried away
from the TV to stop playing because they are so
addicted.

I personally am not addicted, as I can get up and
walk away whenever I want. Mainly because I
don’t play all day every day, I play for a few hours
after school then just watch Netflix.
Extra
I
have spent 5 days real time playing this
game since I got it for my PS3.
I
enjoy this game because of the choices
it gives you. You have the choice of
playing as the hero saving every damsel
in distress, or shooting everyone you meet
because they looked at you funny.
