Senate Minutes January 23, 2012 Opening: Call to Order: Vice President Ruffin Prayer Pledge of Allegiance Roll Call and Establish Quorum: Secretary Johnson Reading and Approval of Minutes Block Chadwick Communications 1. Guest Speaker: Kirk Mustain-Bon Appetit Supervisor; Meredith Dickinson- Coordinator for Environmental Justice and Sustainability for the Moreau Center Kirk Mustain Kirk: Welcome back-the biggest topic is the store opened downstairs. Currently open wed-sun 117. Wanted minimal hours so we could build on them as these were not budgeted items so we wanted to make it all fit. Perishables and non-perishables and should be competitive and usable with meal plans. Not a ton of changes in the commons. The sushi bar was a hit and miss and comments from students made it seem more cost effective to replace it. Still making sushi out of the back and will be in the cases. Will be having themed nights-low cost and a lot of variety. Taking salad bar and making it a cold stone for a night. Want to recapture the goofy aspect from when it was an all you can eat. Meal plans, 82% are still on the two lowest plans. WE ran stats on all of the meal plans and it is almost a perfect bell curve. What you buy or don’t buy determines our menus. Questions? VP Ruffin: 7-11 pm? Kirk: Yes. PM. And we will probably be adjusting those. Someone from the Beacon will be meeting next week. Sen. Balistreri: Suggestion I have heard is fresh produce Kirk: some of those things are already being added VP Ruffin: Still supporting local and sustainability? Kirk: Aiming it at our constituency but it is convenient foods. Crackers, cookie mix, snacks. We want to be price sensitive. I want to say yes we are when it comes to perishables. Taylor: Do you think you are going to continue with buying food first and then presenting receipt? Kirk: while in Salzburg you had to pay first, so we are tinkering with this idea. But before we go through with it we have to think through all the processes. Probably 15% walked through the door last year on 40,000 transactions a week. Director Ducey: Watching in Cove? Kirk: If someone is on the floor yes, but I’m not a watchman and I don’t like having my staff or PSafe on the floor. 99% are honest, but that 1% doesn’t see it as stealing. And eventually it will hurt all you guys. Sen. Chamberlain: Do you know where? Kirk: It is happening all over. In the Cove at lunch time, so easy to walk right out. I was catching people the first day back. Sen. Heyerly: Main justifications is the pricing-I think they are reasonable, but have you thought of making prices available to students? Kirk: I could but it is ultimately an officer decision. Bon Appetit does not make much money but we just want to make sure that we are providing food you want to buy at a reasonable price. If something is not selling, it goes away. Sen. Chadwick: PBJ station? Kirk: It is doing great. Was something we threw together over break and now we want to add to it. The all day toast thing is huge. Sen. Chadwick: Preparation of sandwiches themselves? Kirk: Food contamination becomes the biggest issue; otherwise we would probably do that. There are a lot of food allergies on the rise. Sen. Block: Why is market closed Mon./Tues.? Kirk: Wasn’t in my budget and is built around one employee. Before throwing a bunch of staff at it we want to make sure it works. If there is a need we will continue adding service Sen. Robinson: Name? Kirk: Market used to be behind Haggerty/Tyson and it started as a joke and stuck. Sen. Hamm: What would you estimate for the percent of meal points spent on tea/coffee? Kirk: 15-20%. We will not be raising prices this year like Starbucks has. Meredith Dickinson Meredith: Thank you for hosting me. As coordinator I have a spring semester campaign that is underway. We have joined campus conservation national. CCN is an organization meant to lessen the energy and water consumption in dorms. It is a national campus and the national goal is one gigawatt hour saved and only one dorm will win. We will also have a UP winner. Is a 3 week competition Feb15-Mar7 and there are 9 residence halls competing. We are getting involved to decrease energy/water, increase engagement, dorm pride, and community. UP also has a commitment to sustainability and hopes to be carbon neutral by 2040 in which step 1 is operational saving. Strategic plan is Goal 5 to increase UP visibility. CCN will give the winning dorm building hardware, top 10 will get renewable energy credits, and UP dorm will get $500 grant. Currently recruiting for student leaders: Faith and leadership mgr., dorm captain, direct action, and many others. Student dorm captains: 1 per dorm minimum, and hopefully 1 per floor and there will be mission-based engagement (Teaching/Faith/Service). Need a lot of student leaders and a lot of excitement. I’m in the Moreau Center x7132. We need anyone and everyone. Sen. Chamberlain: Other than shorter showers and turning off lights, what’s the contribution efforts? Meredith: Students will create a best practices campaign. Possibly turning off comp at night. Unplugging room fridge. Water is essentially in the bathing. This could also spread throughout campus-some have adopt a building program or work with IT. VP Ruffin: I think this would be perfect for our dorm Senators to bring to hall councils. Easy and awesome ways to get involved and show leadership. Sen. Resendez: If we know someone, just give them your contact info? Meredith: Yes, thank you. [email protected] 2.
