Coordinator of Summer Programs
Dear Residents:
Summer is a very special and exciting season, one filled with promise, renewal, and growth. For children,
the summer is all about having fun and trying new things, with a little relaxation added in for good
measure! For parents, summer is all about safety, stimulation, and of course, fun!
For years, the Hewlett-Woodmere Playschool has served as an integral part of the summer experience for
the children of our community. The Playschool enables children to expand their horizons, make new
friends, and further develop their character and confidence.
The Playschool’s scheduled activities and special events are carefully planned to ensure that they are age
appropriate, stimulating, and enjoyable for children of all ages. Playschool campers truly enjoy the
benefit of both indoor and outdoor activities. Some of the activities your child will enjoy include:
•
•
•
Indoor: art, physical education, science, computers, swimming, and yoga
Outdoor field activities: soccer, tennis, kickball, football, and sprinkler time
Special events: talent shows, contests, dress-up days, and the Playschool Olympics
In addition to a full schedule of fun and rewarding activities, the success of the Hewlett Woodmere
Playschool is due largely to the dedicated members of our supervisory staff. We are truly fortunate to
have an outstanding summer staff comprised of highly-energetic teachers with years of experience in
recreation. The teachers are ably assisted by responsible and enthusiastic high school and/or college
students who serve as role models for the campers.
Last summer was my first as the administrator in charge of the Hewlett-Woodmere Playschool, and I was
amazed and inspired each and every day as I watched a devoted staff work tirelessly to put smiles on the
faces of young people. I am truly lucky to work with such caring and wonderful people who have
committed themselves to providing safe, healthy, educational experiences to children. Words cannot
describe how uplifting it is to see children with smiling happy faces, and I recognize how fortunate I am
to have the Playschool bring that to me on a daily basis. For this reason, I look forward to the 2014
Summer Playschool and the rewarding experiences it will bring!
I invite you to review the Playschool information included in this brochure. Please do not hesitate to
contact the office of Community Education and Services at (516) 792-4863 if you have any questions or
would like additional information about our program.
On behalf of the Hewlett-Woodmere Department of Community Education and Services and the Summer
Playschool staff, I extend warm regards to our community residents for a healthy, safe, and rewarding
summer.
Sincerely yours,
Thomas Naglieri

SUMMER PLAYSCHOOL PROGRAMS
The Summer Playschool is a well-rounded recreation experience for district children entering
Pre-Kindergarten through 9th grade in September 2014. The Playschools utilize the indoor and outdoor
facilities of two of the district schools. For the summer 2014, we will use Hewlett Elementary School for
students entering Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd Grade. The upper camp, 3rd Grade through 9th Grad, will
be located at Hewlett High School. A variety of recreational activities and special events will take place
at both programs. Staggered beginning and ending times have been arranged for the convenience of
parents who have children attending programs at both locations. These programs are only available for
children residing in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District. Please read the program details carefully.
Children born after December 1, 2010 are not eligible for this program. The Summer Playschool meets
July 2 - August 7, 2014.
SUMMER PLAYSCHOOL AT HEWLETT ELEMENTARY
(Pre-K - 2nd Grade children)
Let your child enjoy a fun-filled, nurturing summer program close to home. The Summer Playschool at
Hewlett Elementary is offered for children who will be entering Pre-K through 2nd grade in September
2014. Children who are entering Pre-K must be at least 4 years of age by December 1, 2014. Proof of age
is required upon registration for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children. Upon registration, you will
be asked to present a birth certificate and proof of residency.
Children participate in co-ed groups according to their grade level. Art, sprinkler time, outdoor games,
drama, music, computers, and science make up some of the regular educational and special recreation
activities. Daily educational activities provide an informal setting to encourage children to use the
knowledge gained during the regular school year. There will be special events planned to culminate the
Summer Playschool. Each child will be provided with a tee shirt. It is important that you indicate your
child’s tee shirt size on the registration form.

SUMMER PLAYSCHOOL AT HEWLETT HIGH SCHOOL
(3rd - 9th Grade children)
The Playschool at Hewlett High School is offered for children entering 3rd to 9th grades in September
2014. This program provides a well-rounded, fun-filled summer experience that is engaging, affordable,
and close to home. Children are supervised in grade and gender specific groups. However, there are also
planned opportunities for co-ed activities. Your child’s day will consist of an integrated schedule of both
recreation and informal education enrichment activities. Art, sports, yoga, theatre, computers, physical
education, swimming, water activities, and science are some of the regular activities. Theme weeks and
special shows by the children and staff are a popular part of this program. The playschool children will
continue to experience offsite recreation trips at no additional cost.
Campers enrolled at Hewlett High School Playschool entering grades 6-9 become part of the Teen
Choices and Challenges Program. Better known as C & C, this program permits our older campers to
participate in specific areas of interest. During the last two periods of each day, C & C campers can
choose to participate in a variety of activities. Some of the choices offered are athletic tournaments,
cooperative games, arts and crafts, and dance.
In order to facilitate teamwork and help in supervision during field trips and events, each child will be
provided with a tee shirt. Tee shirts are required to be worn on any field trips, and on special days.
Please indicate your child’s tee shirt size on the registration form.

programs for the needy as may be established at the Federal, State or County level as approved by the
Superintendent or designee. Families interested in applying for a scholarship and are already approved
for the Free Lunch program must submit the following documents: a signed application for scholarship,

PLAYSCHOOL PROGRAM REFUND PROCEDURES
Full refunds for registrants of the Summer Playschool will be provided only when a request is received in
