Who we are - Campaign to End Loneliness

INVITIATION TO TENDER – FUNDRAISING
CONSULTANCY
“We used to do everything together. I’ve never been on my own, ever.
If you’ve never been lonely, you don’t realise what it is like.
I go hours and hours and never speak to anyone.
The room’s just empty. I’ll never get used to it.”
Margaret Nickless, aged 91.
Widowed and alone for two years.
Who we are
The Campaign to End Loneliness is a network of national, regional and local organisations and people
working together through community action, good practice, research and policy to create the right
conditions to reduce loneliness in later life. We believe that loneliness is not inevitable, and that the
third age can be the best age.
"The Campaign to End Loneliness is a fantastic organisation, engaged in crucial work on an issue that
is of critical importance to us and our society"
Ewan McLennan & George Monbiot
What we believe: It’s time to make loneliness everyone’s business
Every day, average life expectancy in the UK increases by about 5 hours1. And every day there are 150
more people over 65 living with chronic loneliness.
For the last five years, the Campaign to End Loneliness has been working with organisations up and
down the country, sharing evidence and encouraging best practice. We’re extremely proud of what
we’ve achieved:





Through building a new research network of 119 leading academics we have been
instrumental in making loneliness a major public health issue
Our Learning Network has shared best practice with over 900 organisations across all UK
nations, transforming service delivery. 95% say they have improved existing services or
activities to tackle loneliness in older people as a result of the Campaign
We have been an influential development partner in Scotland’s new National Strategy on
Loneliness
83% of English local authorities have commissioned new services to tackle loneliness; the
majority say they used our resources, information and materials to do so
80% of English Health & Wellbeing Boards have made a commitment to tackle loneliness;
73% say this is as a direct result of our influence
At long last, almost everywhere, loneliness is recognised as a major public health issue. The Charities
Evaluation Service’s 2016 evaluation of our work described us as “the national champion of the
issue… a catalyst for change”.
“Across local authorities, the Campaign has been instrumental in just reassuring local authorities that
they should be focused on this issue, that there is good evidence and that there is an organisation that
will be advocating for it”
Kevin Fenton, Director of Health & Wellbeing, Public Health England

But what is actually different for Margaret? The truth is, the percentage of older people who feel
lonely has changed very little over the past 50 years. And, because of the dramatic increase in life
expectancy and the consequent growth in the proportion of people over 65, the number of older
people who are chronically lonely is expected to grow from 1.1 million today, to over 2 million in
2050. We are living in what has been described as “The Age of Loneliness”.
We believe it is time for a radical new approach to tackling loneliness - for a step change in our and
society’s attitudes and actions. Margaret’s loneliness won’t end just through the work of academic
researchers, service commissioners and policymakers. Her loneliness will only be ended by us all,
whether we be neighbours, shop keepers, family or just citizens. All coming together. Margaret’s
loneliness can be ended by mobilising the kindness of her community.
