design brief for Teenage Retreat File - MHJC Online

Mission Heights Junior College - Year 10
Design and Visual Communication (DVC)
Design Assignment – Teenage Retreat
Space
Situation:
A family has a large level area at the rear of their section. They want to build a simple single-level
building for their teenage children to use as a space for an entertainment and retreat space which
is separate to the family home.
Design Brief
Your task is to design the building to meet the design specifications
Design Specifications

Be built using single storey timber frame construction (walls to be standardised to assist in
the production of the building – no curved shapes)

Have an open plan interior (no interior full height walls, except if a toilet is included) with a
floor area of 35 square metres (plus/minus 5m2) not including any deck areas

Have separate areas for kitchen/food preperation and relaxation/entertainment

Include an entry that allows easy access to an outside deck area (deck design not required)

Optional – can have space allocated to a toilet/washroom
Design Considerations:
Consider the needs of the users of the building (human factors) and that your design must meet
the given design specifications
Poduction of your Assignment and recording of your development work

You will use two different digital methods of producing and recording your development
work, one will be for the drawing and development of your floor plan and the other will be
for collating and presentation of your development work. For the floor plan, try
floorplanner.com For presentation, you need a programme that allows the insertion of
images and also the manipulation of text, google slides or MS powerpoint are suitable for
this.

Page sizes can be A3 or A4 landscape orientation, whichever layout is used the page must be
used up the margins, these should be set to moderate size

Notes should be clearly written, size 12 – 14 font, should be in black ink or word processed

Each page must have a title (centre top, size 24 font) with your name and option class
(bottom, right corner size 14 font)

As well as your design drawings, a scale model will be used to communicate your design
ideas
Assessment: Assessment will be carried out using criteria for achievement standard 91068 (1.35
version 4) Demonstrate development of own design ideas communicated through graphics practice
It is not the intention that in 2017, year 10 students will enter any level one achievement
standards for the learning area of DVC
Important - The main points of this achievement standard criteria are that you can;
1. explore design ideas by considering possible alternatives
2. refine and improve your design ideas by considering design details
3. make design judgements that consider the qualities of your design ideas and how they
relate to the aesthetics (aesthetics means beauty) and function (how things work)
Sections of work required (use the heading of each section as a title on your work)
Section 1/ Floor Plan Concepts (digitally produced) there will be one concept floor plan per page,
layout should be in landscape, your work should cover the entire page up to the margins (approx
25mm margins)
Design two different floor plan layouts using a floor plan design programme of your choice

consider possible shapes of the outline and interior spacial layout

floor plan layouts to show separate spaces for kitchen/food preperation area,
relaxation/entertainment area and outside deck area

use lables with leaders to identify design features and spaces

include notes to explain your reasons for the design layout of each concept

floor plans must include main dimensions and total foor area in square metres (M2)

floor plans should include outside deck area
Section 2/ Refined Design Development
This section is where you refine/develop a floor plan into a single final design. Your development
will show how your design progresses from an initial design concept into a final design. You will use
a combination of digital design using your floor plan programme together with notes that explain
your development
What to do?
 Make a digital page, the title is Floor Plan – Development, include a footer with your
name and class, use this format for each development page.
 Select one of your two floor plan concept ideas as the basis for your development
 Copy your chosen floor plan into your development page, this will be used to begin
your development
Your development will be divided into three separate areas of work:
1. Structural - the shape of the building, the size of the building, the positions of windows and
doors
2. Entertainment Area - the size of this area, the interior layout and features of this area
3. Kitchen Area - the size of this area, the interior layout and features of this area
You must consider the design specifications in all of your development work
1/ Structural - begin with the outer shape of your chosen concept design;






consider the positions and also the types of the entry doors (french doors, ranch-slider, bifolding)
consider the positions and also the types of the windows (hinged, bi-fold, sliding)
show the division of the two main areas (kitchen and relaxation)
show the outdoor deck area and the access to it from the interior area
show the dimensions of the building and also the total area in square metres
remember to adhere to the design specifications of size, open plan design etc (see design
specs)
2/ Entertainment Area - using the structural shape from part 1



consider the area and layout of the entertainment area within the exterior shape
show the interior features (entertainment and relaxation)
show the size of the area (in square metres, calculate this from the plan)
3/ Kitchen Area - using the structural shape from part 1



consider the area and layout of the kitchen area within the exterior shape
show the interior features of the kitchen area (benches, appliances)
show the size of the area (in square metres, calculate this from the plan)
IMPORTANT - you must include notes with your work, your notes must:


explain your design and how you have improved the design by making changes
give justifications (reasons) for your decisions - "I have done this because ...." "this will
ensure that ...." the problem was that ....." “to improve this I ……….”
notes should be word processed (12 font) and placed in the most appropriate positions

At the conclusion of this development you will have reached a final design layout, this will
incorporate all the design features of the three areas you have explored, structural,
entertainment and kitchen areas
Section 3/ Final development
This is a single page which incorporates all of the design features that you developed from your
refined floor plan development on one plan, the floor plan should be large enough to clearly
show all of your design features. Notes/text boxes will give details and explanations of your
design features.
Section 4/ Model

A scale model of your final design that shows the design features including the interior
layout and major features
Section 5/ Perspective drawing of your final design
This will be a 2 point perspective drawing of your final design, it will show the exterior of your
building from the point of view that shows the most detail, this will be a separate piece of work
and explored in class after the final development has been completed.
This is the level 1 achievement standard that will be used to assess this assignment:
