“BUFFALO FBLA VISIT DA MALLORY ELEMENTARY FOR AMERICAN ENTERPRISE DAY”
Buffalo, MO, November 22, 2016—On Monday, November 15th, 2016, the Buffalo High School Future Business
Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter visited D.A. Mallory Elementary to teach fourth graders about American Enterprise
Day. FBLA members taught the students about supply and demand, customers/consumers, wholesalers, profit, and
American free enterprise concepts. While at the elementary, FBLA members taught the students by utilizing their
simulation called “Operation Candyland.” The fourth grade students were able to make believe that they were managers
in their very own candy store, and were monitored by the owners (FBLA students) for each store. Fourth grade students
in Austin Starkey and Alyea Portis’s store argued passionately over whether anybody would actually pay $0.50 for a Jolly
Rancher when setting their candy store’s prices. The students learned how to buy from a wholesaler, how to set prices,
take inventory, make customer sales, and how to calculate change and profits. Fourth grade teacher, Ms. Quigley stated,
“FBLA's American Enterprise Project is engaging and informative. The fourth graders learn economic principles and enjoy
the experience. In addition, having our high school students teaching, working and interacting with our fourth graders is
wonderful. It gives our fourth graders an opportunity to observe positive role models.” The winning candy store in each
classroom received a prize, and (of course) all of the students enjoyed lots of candy. “This is a rewarding experience for
both the fourth graders and the high school FBLA students each year! The elementary students really look up to the high
school students, and “Operation Candyland” helps them connect math, marketing, business, and American free
enterprise concepts in a new way,” said Adviser Shaundra Ingram.
The mission of FBLA is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through
innovative leadership and career development programs.
