Players Matters - Players Theatre

Players Matters*
Players Out & About
Yuletide Players-One to Watch
On Saturday 5th December a small number of Players will be performing a potted version
of A Christmas Carol at the Victorian Market in Cheadle. The market is held once a
month on the Green (to find us, look out for the landmark bronze seaman statue standing
on the Green gazing out at the traffic. He is on the main road on the left hand side as you
continue up Cheadle High Street beyond the traffic lights towards Stockport. Performances
will last around 15 minutes on a rolling basis from 11 am-2 pm. We are hoping to spread
Christmas Cheer whilst simultaneously spreading the word about Cheadle Hulme Players.
We need to raise our profile in the area and put an end to everyone thinking only
automatically of Chads, as soon as we mention we are based in Cheadle Hulme.
Do come along and swell our audience numbers - you would be most welcome!

Pam's Report
I would like to thank all those who attended the Barking Bake Off on 10th October and
special thanks to our resident strong men-Chris, Peter and Rod.
The afternoon was fine and sunny. We opened at 2 pm and closed at 4. We had lots of
visitors who enjoyed the cream tea, coffee and cake.
Many thanks to Geraldine and helpers for keeping the steady flow of visitors happy with
teas, coffee and goodies. The cake stall was managed by Judy and Barbara. Cakes just
kept on arriving and were sold in no time. Krysy took charge of the Guess the weight of
the cake and the Number of Biscuits in the jar and sold lovely cards. Norma, whose son
has a Hearing Dog, made little pots and Christmas tree decks to sell.
But the star of the show was Cameron, the lovely black Labrador who looks after Richard
and makes his life so good. We were shown details of the training these dogs go through
and the cost by Rachel who works for the Hearing dogs.
A good time was had by all and a grand total of £400 was raised.
Oh and I must tell you, that my two naughty spaniels stole a cake and really enjoyed it!

Judy's Appeal
We need to swell the number of participants in the 100 Club – 2015-2016
£10 to join - Three Prizes each draw - Three draws a year
For those of you who don't know, half of the money raised goes to members who win and
half goes to Players Theatre. Therefore, the more members we have, the more money we
are able to distribute and more money raised for Players.
At present I have 34 paid up members, one less than last year....... the list in the bar has
36 spaces and I would love to have names in all of them. The first draw will take place on
Saturday, 12th December in the Bar. DON'T MISS OUT - JOIN TODAY!! Thank you.

Players Youth News - By Barbara Harris
Well, I'm now 4 weeks into my new role as Director of Players Youth Theatre, aided by
Robert McGregor- my very able Assistant Director. We meet on a Saturday morning from
10.30am to 1pm and are rehearsing Blood Brothers by Willy Russell-The Studio
Version, ie. with most of the music missing. However you will still hear some of your
favourite tunes from the show.
Blood Brothers is to be performed on Sunday 13th December 2015 at 3pm, with mince
pies and tea/coffee after. The 15 young people involved are full of enthusiasm and are a
lovely group of boys and girls. We certainly have lots of laughs, along with the very hard
work.
I was very excited to be able to tell my group that at a recent Executive Committee
meeting, it had proposed and agreed that Players Youth Theatre would be supported by
all the backstage and FOH teams of Players Theatre, affording them the same level of
support that the seniors receive. Also that the tickets will be sold on line.

In future, all their productions will take place over 2 nights, namely Friday and Saturday.
Blood Brothers will be adjudicated too, which hopefully will help us in our learning
process.
In turn, Players Youth Theatre will endeavour to help with FOH during main productions.
Also we hope that the boys and girls will join us at our social events, maybe with their
families.
Please, please support Players Youth Theatre in this new era and book your tickets for
Blood Brothers. If you would like to come and meet the boys and girls and introduce
yourselves, do come down and see us one Saturday morning.

Murder Mystery Evening
This year we are celebrating Christmas together with a difference. We are having a
Who Dunnit? party, based loosely on the well-known Murder Mystery party game.
Please contact Rod & Pam Lambert on 0161 483 9796 or look on the website for
further details.

Tracks of my years
Advance Warning for this one. This night is back by popular demand. Those of you who
attended the last one two years ago will know the procedure. The theme of the evening is
to share your personal music choices with the rest of us, together with a bit of
background to what makes them special to you. We got quite an insight into some of our
friends' pasts last time and it made for a jolly good evening.
So start by giving some thought to that single piece of music now. Feel free to let me
know whenever, because sourcing the music can be quite a task. By email to
[email protected].
Or look out at the theatre for a hard copy form, appearing with the final submission date,
in order for you to fill in the details!

mass of dark hair, just like her father apparently. Mother, father and baby are doing well
and Val is over the moon!

for our play and we may be glad of it So please bear us in mind before taking potentially
useful items to the Charity Shop or the Tip. But please don't be offended if we say NO, as
storage space is limited.
Suggestions Box
I have had a request that any future circulatory emails be in normal script please, rather
than all in capitals, as I understand that the latter prove more difficult to read, particularly
for those who are getting older.
Pertinent Facts.
Did you know that the word foyer denoting the entrance hall of a theatre and a place
where audiences gather and also applied to the green room at a theatre, is closely linked
with the Roman word for hearth or fireplace, namely focus. For those francophiles
amongst us - it means home. Hence, its broader meaning today is centre of energy and
attention from the Latin adjective focarius. For those francophiles amongst us- it means
home in French and the idea of a family gathering around a source of warmth. Rather a
nice definition of a word for an integral part of our building for us at Players!
Furthermore.
We are all familiar with the phrase Break a leg before a performance. However In
Portuguese and Spanish-speaking countries, before each performance, the director and
actors gather on the stage, join hands and scream "Muita Merda!"/"¡Mucha mierda!".
The term, "A lot of shit", reputedly comes from the fact that historically, people would
arrive at theatres by horse and carriage. A popular play would have many people attending
- thus increased horse droppings. Similarly, in France and in Italy, "Merde!" or Merde is the
cry.
The Plays The Thing.
The Weekend broke box office records this yeat with good attendances. Thanks to a
great production and a big push on publicity. Well done all concerned.
Rehearsals are in full swing for Iron which starts in just over a week's time. All the
best to cast, crew and Director. Merde as they say in France. Come in your masses to
see it. More about that next time.
