PUSHCART DERBY TEAM PROCEDURES, SCHEDULE AND RULES
TEAM CAPTAINS: Please distribute this information to ALL team members.
PROCEDURES & SCHEDULE
1. IMPORTANT-All team members (2 pushers and 1 driver) for each pushcart team must arrive to
Waite Park by 11:00 am to sign in, meet with Derby Refs and Officials and for the pushcart safety
inspection. Carts that do not meet race readiness requirements will NOT be allowed to race, but will
be allowed to be judged in the most creative car judging.
2. All pushcarts teams must be familiar with the race tracks and will partake in practice runs before the
official races begin.
11:00 MANDATORY Pushcart Team Meeting/Derby Refs and Officials will inspect all pushcarts
11:30 MANDATORY Pushcart practice runs. If your pushcart is not deemed ready-to-race
by 12:00pm, your team cannot race but can only take part in the most creative car judging.
12:00 Drag races for qualifying times
1:00 Competition Races. Teams will be divided into Championship and Consolation brackets and
seated in heats based on qualifying times.

PUSHCART Rules:
1. Carts must not have any protruding parts (long bolts, large pieces of wood, knives, etc.).
2. All carts need to be tagged as “good to go” by official derby referees before competing in races.
3. All carts need to have a seatbelt that securely holds the driver in the pushcart.
4. ALLRIDERS MUST WEAR A HELMET.
5. Steering by the pushers or drivers is permitted.
6. NO: pull carts, rickshaws/rickshas (a pushcart is a cart that is pushed; not pulled).
Carts must be equipped with the following safety items:
Seat Belt: must be safe and must fit the racer appropriately

TEAM Rules:
1. Each team must consist of one driver and two pushers. Three team members total.
2. Team members must be 12 years old or older to compete on team (pushcart team members 12-17
years old need parent’s permission).
3. All pushcart racing team members must wear helmets.
4. No sandals or flip flops; all team members must wear closed-toed shoes.
5. All entrants must have signed waivers on file with the race organizers prior to competition.
RACING Rules:
1. All races will be overseen by the Official Derby Referees – decisions by the refs are final
2. Races will start with front wheels of each pushcart on starting line
3. Stay in your own race lane; do not cut any pushcart off while racing. This behavior will result in
disqualification or do-over. – decisions by the refs are final
4. Any early jump starts will result in a disqualification or do-over. – decisions by the refs are final
5. The race is over when front wheels cross the finish line.

I read and understand the listed pushcart derby rules and procedures. I understand that my team will
not qualify to participate if our pushcart is not compliant. I release, waive, and discharge not to hold the
promoters (Waite Park Community Council), City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Parks and Recreation,
participants, associations, sanctioning organizations, (or any affiliates thereof ), liable from all claims, demands,
losses or damages on account of any injury, including, but not limited to the death or injury of the participants or
damage to property.
