Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection
Nature Unleashed: Earthquakes and Hurricanes*
June 19 – September 6, 2010
Nature Unleashed investigates what we know and are still
learning about nature’s terrifying power by focusing on
disasters – hurricanes and earthquakes.
“Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection” features more than 200 pins, many of which
Secretary of State Albright wore to communicate a message during her diplomatic tenure. The
exhibition examines the collection for its historic significance as well as the expressive power of
jewelry to communicate through a style and language of its own.
The exhibit accompanies Secretary Albright’s latest book, Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s
Jewel Box (HarperCollins). “I found that jewelry had become part of my personal diplomatic
arsenal,” Secretary Albright says in the book. “While President George H.W. Bush had been known
for saying ‘Read my lips,’ I began urging colleagues and reporters to ‘Read my pins.’” Both the
book and the exhibit explore the stories behind her pins, their political and diplomatic significance
and information on their designers.
*Includes special summer camps at the Clinton Center
This exhibition is based upon the exhibition “Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters,” created by The Field Museum, Chicago.

The Clinton Center created age-appropriate tours for Pre K-3rd, 4th-8th and 9th-12th to
accompany “Read My Pins.” Each tour highlights several pins in the collection and allows
children to think about the symbolism and how Secretary Albright used them as a part of her
diplomatic arsenal. These educational materials will also be available for self-guided tours at
the Special Services Desk located in the lobby of the Clinton Library.

Al Wertheimer chose to capture 21-yearold Elvis Presley on the threshold of
super stardom not because he was a
fan, but because he was a student of
human nature, because he was curious
and because, like Elvis, he could be
swept up by the purity of experience.
That unscripted eloquence resulted in
photographs so unique that they remind
us why Elvis matters.

All students who entered the contest were invited to participate in a
special program at the Clinton Center with former Secretary of State
Albright on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at 11 a.m. The top three
winners served on a panel and asked Secretary Albright several
questions about current events and her exhibit, “Read My Pins: The
Madeleine Albright Collection,” during the 45 minute program.
Additionally, all essay contest participants were treated to another
exceptional program on April 8, 2010, with Laura Bowen Wills, who
currently serves in the Office of the United States Chief of Protocol,
U.S. State Department. Wills led a workshop on Presidential
Protocol, which culminated with a “Dinner for Future Diplomats,”
a recreation of a White House Dinner.
Winning essays were selected by a panel of judges comprised of
educators, representatives from the Arkansas Department of
Education and a student from the Clinton School of Public Service.
Essays were judged based on grammar, style and content.
