Welcome to Second Grade! Our assessment process involves both gathering information and using that information as a means to improve teaching and student learning. It includes setting our expectations and standards high, thus enabling us to heighten performance. Assessment helps us create a shared academic culture and communication system with our parents. What can you expect? Nightly homework of reading for 20 minutes and studying math facts. Math Facts Timed Tests every Tuesday and Thursday. Spelling Tests on Fridays. Home projects for family involvement. A weekly newsletter and daily behavior/homework log for up-to-date communication and student progress, parent signature, and comments. Parent access to the Renaissance Learning website to monitor student A.R. progress. At least one parent-teacher conference to be held in October. Other conferences scheduled upon request by the parent or the teacher. In second grade, we assess basic skills as required by National and State Standards as well as developmental stages of growth. Second Grade is considered Non-Graded Primary, so we do not give grades, but focus on mastery of these skills and developmental maturity. 2nd Grade Assessments Preliminary tests in Reading, Language, and Math assess current level of knowledge and to begin ability grouping of students for Reading and Math. Weekly Math Facts timed quizzes to check for mastery of skills. STAR Reading Test every nine-week grading period to assess reading growth and adjust A.R. point goals. Weekly work on the Successmaker reading and math computer programs and homework sheets for individualized mastery of skills. MAP testing in the Fall, Winter, and Spring for measuring academic growth. MAP Skills Checklists weekly until skills are mastered. Classroom observations and documentation of developmental skills expected in second grade. Student rewards and awards Students earn classroom dollars for completing nightly homework and getting behavior logs signed by parents. Students can also earn dollars for doing well on tests and work, classroom participation, and good manners. Student dollars can be taken away for not being on task in the classroom. Students can buy Fun Friday play time with their classroom dollars. At the end of the year, students are able to spend their classroom money on bigger rewards, like pajama day and teacher for the day, etc…. Students earn BLING chips from teachers throughout the building for good behavior. BLING rewards are decided on by the class when they have earned an allotted number of chips. Second Grade celebrates Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day with a classroom party. On Awards Day, second graders only get awards for earning 100 A.R. points at 80% accuracy and passing ALL Math Facts Quizzes (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). They will earn a medal for each of these two goals that are accomplished. Mrs. Scott Mrs. Standiford Mrs. Thomas How do we use the data? Throughout the year, we use testing data to drive our instruction. Instruction is given to students whole group, small group, and individually, depending on the need of each student. From the data, we form ability groups where your child will be in class with other students at their level. This makes instruction more effective and targeted to your child’s abilities. These groups sometimes change as we continue to assess. Using the MAP data, we develop lesson plans for individual instruction on very specific skills that your child is ready to receive in order to show academic growth. This differentiated instruction makes sure your child is getting exactly what they need to grow academically. This growth will be evident when we compare Fall and Spring MAP scores!
