Organises
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON
“LAW AND MEDIA: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES AND CHALLENGES”
On Thursday 11th February , 2016.
About The Seminar:
The relationship between law and media is very old, complex and dynamic. They are
not separate domains but constantly overlap, define and redefine each other. If the
law defines media and regulates media practice by bringing it into the very folds of
the law, the media influences the framing, implementation and interpretation of the
law. There are countless examples that illustrate the relationship of law and media.
Moreover, in a democratic country like India this relationship assumes more
significance because media is essentially known as the fourth pillar of democracy.
The media are the means by which we receive and send information we want and
need. A democracy functions on the basis of a free exchange of information. The
technological development in the past few decades has enlarged the sphere of media
and empowered it. The social networking sites like Face book and Twitter and peerto- peer networks such as Whatsapp have made media a powerful instrument of
change in the hands of a common man. Keeping in mind these facts, the Institute of
Law, KUK takes great pride in organising a national seminar on the contemporary
issues and challenges in the relationship of law and media. The seminar will provide
a platform to law and media practitioners, legal and media theorists, scholars from
the law and social sciences, media and visual studies and media anthropology to
engage in a meaningful dialogue, while keeping in mind the nuances of legal and
media practice.
