The Battle of the Books is…
• a fun way to inspire, and get students
excited about reading.
• a reading incentive program for
6th grade.
students in 2nd –
• Books to read.
• a way to make new friends.
• team work.
Anyone in grades 2-6 can participate if they want to…but you don’t
have to. You may want to read the books and come to the practices,
but not compete and that’s okay too.
Book Lists
• Books are chosen by
America’s Battle of the
Books. http://battleofthebooks.org/
• There are three book lists...
2nd grade: 10 book list
3rd – 4th grade: 20 book list
5th – 6th grade: 20 book list
Teams by grade level
• There are officially
four grade level competitions:
• 3rd grade
• 4th grade
• 5th grade
• 6th grade
• 2nd grade has been added
by our school --but not for district
competition.
One team per grade level is
crowned BATTLE CHAMPS!

Held at Valley View in

Teams test their
knowledge of certain
books against other
teams.
Battle Questions
• Students will answer questions about books from their whole grade
level book list.
• The answer to each question is always the Title of the book and the
Author’s name.
• Example: In which book does a boy ride a pterodactyl?
Answer: Dinosaur before dawn by Mary Pope Osborn
(they won’t always be that easy).

What to do?
• Start Reading the Battle books.
You may read the books yourself, with someone
else, listen to the books, have someone read to
you, or all four.
You can write questions from the books if you’d like to. Then you can challenge your
friends!
Example- Question: In which book does a boy ride on a pterodactyl?
Answer: Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne
You may want to make it harder than that.
You’re trying to become an ‘expert’ on 4-5 books.
You don’t have to read all 10 or 20, but if you choose
to you will get your picture up on the
“Battle Hall of Fame” board in the library.

• As you read the books you will fill out
a short form in the library and then
you will receive a ……???
• Come to Battle Meetings in the Library
once a week during lunch recess.

You will Learn things about the books in fun ways
like jeopardy, relay races and games.
•
You’ll gather with friends and even make some
new ones.

Sign up in the Library
• Sign up, to be a part of the Battle of the Books, will be in
the library—just talk with Mrs.Thorpe to get a form.
• You don’t have to compete to read the books and come
to the meetings. But you will have to have a permission
slip signed by your parents/guardians if you’re going to
come to battle meetings.

January – February:
• Official sign up
• Form Teams
• Choose a team name, decide what to wear and make a team poster.
• Practice with your team!
• Come to Battle Meetings to play games, and challenge other readers.
• Read More Books
March 24th Battle:
• Suit up Battle until one team per grade is crowned Battle Champ!
April 14th (Saturday):
• District Battle of the Books for the Battle Champ Teams 3rd – 6th grades.
