Royal in rape claim
SYDNEY: A Nepalese royal
family member who was delivering a takeaway Indian
meal has been accused of raping a sleeping householder, a
Sydney court was told.
Amit Hamal, 21, of Marrickville, appeared in Waverley
Local
Court
yesterday
Accused man, 21, was delivering takeway food, court told
charged with having sexual
intercourse without the woman’s consent on July 16 at a
Rose Bay house in Sydney.
In unsuccessfully applying
for bail, his lawyer said that
Hamal was a member of the
Nepalese royal family and
disputed the charge.
The lawyer said Hamal said
the sex was consensual and
occurred after the delivery
driver rang the doorbell twice
and telephoned. The door was
ajar and Hamal went inside,
where he saw a man asleep on
the lounge but he could not
wake him, the lawyer said.
Hamal then walked into a
bedroom where the woman,
44, was asleep and when she
eventually stirred she took off
some clothing and they had
consensual sexual activity,
the lawyer said. But the
crown’s lawyer said the
charge was of a serious sexual
nature and further charges
were likely.
She submitted Hamal was a
flight risk. Hamal was refused
bail and the matter was adjourned to July 29.

Bikie in poll run
CANBERRA: Armed robbery is a surprisingly unprofitable activity, with almost a third of robbers escaping with
nothing at all and just a handful hitting
the big time, a new study reveals.
The survey, which looked at robberies carried out in 2007, shows the average haul was $1066, but most got less.
The results were skewed by a small
number of high-yield robberies, with
one street heist netting $125,000.
The study was conducted by the
Australian Institute of Criminology
through the National Armed Robbery
Monitoring Program.
BRISBANE: He’s served time, he has

Outcasts Motorcycle Club member
Russell ‘‘Camel’’ Wattie, 49, will register as an independent candidate today.
Mr Wattie said his two-and-a-half
years behind bars and his time as a
truckie and bikie give him insider information that could help improve the
corrective service system, transport issues and new anti-bikie laws.
‘‘I’m not hiding anything in my
past,’’ Mr Wattie told AAP.
‘‘I’m a hard worker and I pay taxes.’’

A search involving up to 30 SES volunteers and a helicopter failed to find
the 55-year-old and it was called off
on Friday.
Insp Gleeson said Mr Carleton’s
mental state may not have been
‘‘100 per cent’’ at the time of his disappearance. ‘‘We believe he might have
been in some sort of distress or under
some pressures at the time,’’ he said.
‘‘We’re concerned for his welfare.’’
Bendigo Bank public relations manager Lauren Treacy on Tuesday said:
‘‘Police at this point have said their
number one priority is to find Colin
and obviously we support that.’’
She said that investigations were
ongoing and she could not reveal the extent of the financial irregularities,
which reports have put at $3.1 million.
The bank has yet to lodge a formal
complaint with police.

Bank boss missing
BRISBANE: A bank manager disappeared the day before he was to be questioned over financial irregularities at
his Queensland branch, police say.
Colin John Carleton, who managed
the Bendigo Bank’s Atherton branch,
was last seen on Tuesday last week,
when he set off from his home on a
trail bike.
Police said he was due to be questioned the following day by private
investigators for Bendigo Bank.
‘‘He had an appointment with private investigators on the Wednesday,
and he did not make that appointment,’’ Mareeba district acting Inspector Kevin Gleeson told reporters yesterday. ‘‘That’s when his family was
contacted and they didn’t have the
knowledge of his whereabouts ... and
that’s when we started to search for
Mr Carleton.’’
