MISSION
HEROH students operate as an extension of the Wellness Center at South Dakota State University. As peer educators,
HEROH provides campus-wide health promotion campaigns designed to prevent health problems by educating and
encouraging healthy lifestyles.
OBJECTIVES
 To provide health related educational programs to SDSU students through classroom and residential hall
presentations.
 To provide prevention education and awareness activities to SDSU students to create a healthier campus.
 To give HEROH members experience in developing and presenting health education programs.
 To give HEROH members the training and experiences needed to gain leadership skills.
HEROH members hold to the following principles:
 We are committed to our personal wellness and engage in activities that keep us healthy
 We show our esteem for students by effectively offering well prepared information
 We strive to create a meaningful experience for all participants
 We are members of a team that can rely on each other
 We are willing to work towards having positive and healthy relationships with each other
 We understand our message content and present information in a conversational tone
TIME COMMITMENT
Minimum of 1 hour per week includes an hour in the HEROH office performing office duties or attendance at planned
events in a school year. *Needed in order to include HEROH on resume.
Programming includes:
 Classroom and residential hall presentations:
o Alcohol Abuse and Binge Drinking
o Safer Sex
o Nutrition, Exercise/ Physical Activity
o Tobacco Awareness
o Weight Management
o Illness prevention and self-care
 Great American Smoke Out 5K and Children’s Miracle Network 5K
 Pre-Finals Stress free Activity Days
 SDSU Wellness Fair
 Wellness Wednesday
 SDSU Wellness Center Blood Drive
Other Responsibilities:
 Conduct research on health issues affecting college students
 Assist in needs assessment activities program evaluation
 Participate in biweekly meetings/weekly office hour
 Participate in monthly HEROH programming
ORIENTATION/TRAINING


Members are provided a brief orientation following HEROH meetings and during their weekly office hour.
New members receive their training by observing presentations conducted by more experienced peer educators.
