Abstract
Painting
Abstract artists felt that they did
not have to paint things
realistically.
In their paintings they would often
paint people, animals and places
using different shapes and colours.
Abstract artists would paint
different shapes and colours to
help show the world in a different
way.

activity
The artist behind these three
artworks is NZ artist Matt
Henry.
As we saw, each painting
focused on colour, shape and
size.
Using this style of painting
create colour drawings of
objects from home or in the
classroom.
These drawings have to be the
same size as the objects you
are drawing, so using
measuring tools are important.

We learnt…
• Abstract painters decided to use colour and
shape to show the world in a different way,
• Some abstract artists were so interested in
shapes and colour that they would eventually
disguise what they had painted,
• artists like Matt Henry used shape, colour
and size to help make their paintings look
like the objects they painted,
far?
In the next lesson we will explore “how
to make something abstract”
