ConferenceObjectives
Theobjectivesofthe2017GreatBasinConsortiumConferencearetohaveparticipantslearnaboutand
contributetoimplementationoftheIntegratedRangelandFireManagementStrategyActionable
SciencePlan.Initialspeakerswilldiscussthepurposeandcomponentsofthestrategyandthescience
plan,andbreakoutsessions(seeconferenceagenda)willallowworkshopparticipantstocontribute
ideasandstepsforimplementationofthescienceplanovertheshorttermandthelongterm.Current
researchprojectswillbepresentedthroughpostersessions.Areportwillbeproducedfromfeedback
receivedfrombreakoutsessionsonthefivetopicsoftheSciencePlan.Researchers,managers,and
practitionersfromallregionsofthesagebrushbiomeareencouragedtoattend.
SciencePlanBackground
TheIntegratedRangelandFireManagementStrategycalledforanactionablescienceplanofprioritized
researchneeds(viewtheActionableSciencePlanonIRFMS.org).Theplanwascompletedin2016and
identifies37priorityscienceneedscategorizedinfivebroadtopicsrelatedtomanagementofthe
sagebrushecosystemofthewesternUnitedStates.Thetopicsare:fire,invasiveplants,restoration,
sagebrushandgreatersage-grouse,andclimateandweather.The37priorityscienceneedsidentifiedin
theplanareasharedvisionofthenear-termscienceneededtoinformmanagementstrategiesand
developmanagementtools.Scienceplanningandprioritizationworkconductedoverthepastfiveyears
byFederalandStateagencieswasthefoundationforplandevelopment.Thescienceplanteamand
contributorsfromFederalandStatemanagementagenciesanduniversitieshavedevelopeda
descriptionofeachofthepriorityneedsandidentifiedactionsforaddressingthem.Thisplanwas
developedutilizingaprocessthatallowedinterestedpublicsandstakeholderstheopportunityto
provideinputonprioritizationofthescienceneeds.Ithasalsogonethroughpeerandcollegialreview
aswellasagencyprotocolsforthepublicationofsciencedocuments(U.S.GeologicalSurveyandU.S.
ForestServiceResearchandDevelopmentreviewandapproval).Thescienceplanteamconsistedof
stafffromtheDepartmentofInterior(DOI),DepartmentofAgriculture,GreatBasinandGreatNorthern
LandscapeConservationCooperatives,JointFireScienceProgram,andWesternAssociationofFish
WildlifeAgencies.TheU.S.GeologicalSurvey(USGS),BureauofLandManagement(BLM),andU.S.Fish
andWildlifeService(USFWS)participatedfromtheDOI.TheU.S.ForestService(USFS),Natural
ResourcesConservationService(NRCS),andAgricultureResearchService(ARS)participatedfromthe
DepartmentofAgriculture.
