Athletics Lower, Middle and Upper News Mr. Jeff Rohrig • (402) 556-3772, ext. 1032 • [email protected] Friday Night Lights! Raiders Ready for First Game of Season Cheerleaders Takes Third in Cheer Category During Summer Camp Experience The Brownell-Talbot varsity football team will play its first ever home night game in school history at 7 p.m. Friday, August 24, on the School’s Skutt Field. In late June, the B-T cheerleaders attended UCA Cheer camp at the Inn at Okoboji. The team worked hard and improved to earn two superior ribbons on their final evaluations. The season-opener against Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer was scheduled for 4 p.m., but with concerns about late afternoon heat, the School will rent portable lights for the field. Make plans to attend the game and cheer the Raiders to a win. The team of 28 returns eight starters on offense and nine on defense and is motivated to improve on last year’s season. The team has a bye August 31 and then travels to Yutan for the second game on Friday, September 7. Head coach is Mr. Mike Mancuso. Assistant coaches are Mr. Wade Lanum, Mr. Brad Dunlap, and Mr. John Olson. US Volleyball The US girls’ volleyball team is ready to begin the 2012 fall season. Head Coach Mrs. Randi Scott and Assistant Coach Ms. Ashley Herber take over the squad that went 11-17 last year. The girls travel to Louisville Thursday, August 30, for their first triangular with Malcolm and Louisville. The team's first home dual is Tuesday, September 11, versus Weeping Water. Plan to cheer for the Raiders this season. B-T Youth Sports Organization Update The basketball season for B-T youth is going through some changes this year. In the past the School has helped coordinate teams for students in preschool through grade six. Scheduling the gyms for all of the practices has always been challenging, but due to an extended season for our Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade boys’ and girls’ teams this year, the B-TYSO can no longer offer basketball to grades PS-4. Parents of children in grades PS-4 are encouraged to participate working directly through the YMCA. The B-TYSO will continue to offer basketball for boys and girls in grade five and six as a feeder program to the Middle School basketball program. The athletes will participate in the regular season this year, but the Early Bird season will not be offered through the B-TYSO Program. The regular season registration forms will be available online in October with a deadline of Monday, November 12. Look for more information in the October newsletter. Volunteers are needed to help with B-TYSO. There are many opportunities including managing the uniforms, newsletter and communications, and coordinating the search for coaches or volunteering to coach. Mr. Brad Dunlap, P.E. teacher and coach, is the new B-TYSO Director. He would appreciate help from parents to fill the positions listed above. Coach Dunlap can be reached at [email protected] or (402) 556-3772, ext. 1031. 7 On the last day of camp, the cheerleaders entered the "Camp Champion Competition" where they performed their best cheer and dance learned at camp. The performances were scored against all the other teams. The team place third in the “Cheer” category behind Millard West and Papillion South, both class A schools. The team also earned the Tradition Award for "inspiring leadership on and off the field.” Grace Bydalek, ’14, earned All-American honors by performing a cheer, a dance, and a jump that met a national standard set by Universal Cheerleading Association. Girls’ Golf The girls’ golf team kicks off its season on Thursday, August 23, with a dual against Platteview at 4 p.m. The 2012 team roster includes senior Aisha Yapp; juniors Christina Fossum, Chloe Dana, Emily Bergquist, and Carsen Kesick; sophomore Sadie Rich; and freshmen Maddy Bock, Elise Siffring, Shiza Haroon, and Cheyenne Hanson.
