PROJECT DESCRIPTION
“Words can hurt. Shake them off!” is a KA1 Youth Exchange that aims at fighting all forms of
discrimination and violation of human rights, thus fight extremism and hate speech online.
Nowadays there is an excessive and constant internet and digital devices use, unlimited
connectivity often results in hate online speech phenomenon. This expression, often translated
into Italian with the formula "incitement to hatred" means a type of speech that has no other
function than to express hatred and intolerance. The exchange will stimulate young people on this
issue and bring them to it emotionally and cognitively. It will take place in Palermo (Sicily) from 08
May to 13 May 2017 (07 May arrival day, 14 May departure day) and will involve 48 participants
from Italy, Turkey, Spain, Greece, Sweden, France, Germany and Hungary.
The main aims of the project are to raise young people's awareness of their behavior on line and
about its dangers and to increase young people's awareness of the dangers of hate speech on line
as a threat to basic human rights and democracy. Through these objectives, the participants will
be more aware of themselves, of their role in contemporary society for their own actions, of the
EU values and policies, they will be able to recognize and combat the human rights violations
related to the gender issues and they will develop their activism and self-esteem, as well as their
sense of initiative and self-criticism.
They will have different cultural, social backgrounds and, of course, different sexual orientation,
in order to obtain a non-homogenous group and to facilitate a fruitful and stimulating peereducation. Participants may be activists, volunteers, youth workers or youth interested in the
subject of the project and motivated to live a short mobility experience abroad and deal with
people from different countries and cultures.
Our project will therefore encourage the acquirement of different knowledge, skills and
competencies as well as attitudes and behaviors, which are useful to contribute to their personal
growth. Young people will be able to discover the importance of cultural difference, mutual
understanding and peaceful exchange. Dialogue and debate will be the main elements of the
experience that young people will undertake. It will enhance the freedom of thought, diversity,
potential and creativity of the participants to make them active agents of social development and
change.
The project is both a moment of self-analysis, a moment of non-formal learning and a starting
point for networking in order to stimulate future collaboration in the framework of Erasmus+
Programme, and to create conditions for the development of long-term partnerships.
ACTIVITIES
The working method is mainly based on the active participation of participants promoted through
non-formal and informal activities. It means that you will learn from each other, using your
different experiences and expressing freely your thoughts and opinions.
English is the main language of the project. However, we don’t want to discourage you to
participate if you feel that your level of English is not very high. The project staff may give you

support, by using inclusive methods to make possible the integration of all participants during the
training.
For a detailed description of the activities, which are implemented day by day, see the timetable
provided by the hosting organization.
In order to apply these approaches, we will need you to prepare for some sessions before your
arrival.
PREPARATION BEFORE THE DEPARTURE
Before departure, we ask the participants, supported by their sending organizations, to carry out
some tasks, useful for the activities:
1. Introduction and objectives of the project;
2. Making a research and collecting data, images, video, articles about the hate speech issue
in their country and at EU level;
3. Making a discussion about the collected data;
4. Filling of a questionnaire (this is useful for the staff to identify if inside the group there is a
discriminatory attitude);
5. Making clear all the logistic and learning aspects before the departure (i.e.
reimbursement, travel, accommodation, meals, learning outcome etc…).
6. Preparation for the intercultural evening such as making a presentation of their own
culture and bringing some typical food (we would like that the participants may express
their creativity, for that reason they can freely choose what is the best way for them to
present their culture. The important thing is that it should last 10min.),
7. Bring good mood and will to participate actively during the exchange!!!
