Spring 2017
Trip to France.
A trip to the Aubrac could be organised if
there is enough interest. The date has been
picked to coincide with a show there.
Anyone who would have an interest in
going please let the office know before the
27th of February, so we have an idea of
numbers and whether it is worth
organising. The dates of the show are
October 14 and 15 (regional show of the
Aveyron possibly in Laguiole aprox 200300 Aubracs). A very approximate
costing for the trip leaving Wednesday 11th
and returning Monday 16th could come to
€ 550. This includes return flights
(possibly to Carcassonne or Lyon) hotel
(bedroom sharing+ breakfast), diner, bus
in France. This trip being at the end of the
tourist season would be likely to stay
reasonnable value. The trip would include
day(s) at the show and visits to herds.
More accurate details will be given to
those who have put their name forward
when we have an idea of numbers.
before making their decision. New
catalogues have been ordered from France.
Gene Ireland :
Calverstown Koala is now out of stock
except for Pedigree breeders signed up to
the program as are Slaneymill Jack and
Ballinclea Iveco. Francis Donohoe’s bull
Johnstown Keith 1358, a son of Heritier, is
now in Tully and should move to Enfield AI
station in the very near future. His straws
should be available later on in the spring.
NEW MEMBERS
Our society is growing rapidly, with 35
new members approved in 2016. This year
looks very promising too. 10 new
members have already been approved.
Let’s keep up the good work.
YEAR LETTER 2017 = M
TUAM SALE;
AI:
A new order is arriving shortly from
France of straws to be held by the Society.
The bulls that have been selected are either
promising young French bulls (Jintou-son
of Heritier, Joker and Lancou) or reliable
older bulls the Society feels we should
have for the pedigree breeders to use
(Dolby&Obelix). There is also sexed
semen from 2 bulls Bayon II and Lancou
(new bull awaiting code). The web site
will be updated in the coming weeks with
a description of the various bulls available
and advice on their use so breeders can
have more information
This year's Tuam Aubrac Sale takes place
on Monday, April 17. It is important to
have a good show of stock. Entry forms
are enclosed.
TULLAMORE SHOW :
This year's Tullamore Show takes place on
Sunday, August 13. It would be great to
have even more breeders exhibiting at the
show. Also it is important to exhibit at
more of the regional shows. Along with
having Aubracs at Tinahely, and Tullow
Shows, we need to expand to have a
presence at shows such as Bonniconlon,
Charleville, and Virginia (to name just a
few). Maybe there are Northern breeders

BREEDING SEMINAR IN
KILKENNY MART
The Aubrac Society are holding a
Breeding Seminar in Cillin Hill on Friday,
March 24. We will be demonstrating the
use of Aubracs in both the dairy, and
suckler herds. We will have speakers from
ICBF, and some of the AI companies.
Please make every effort to attend, and
encourage as many farmers as possible to
come along. It promises to be a great
evening, with some lovely stock on
display. For more information call 087

Whole Herd Recording.
The Council of the Aubrac Society has
endorsed the ICBF Whole Herd Recording.
The Aubrac cow is ideally suited for this
scheme which is based on an original
visual assessment of the animals but also
weighing. The cows suckling a calf are
weighed as well as the calves. The idea is
to compare the two weights. A medium
size cow rearing a reasonably good calf
will be at an advantage compared to a cow
from a heavier breed rearing the same size
calf. This should work in favour of the
Aubrac and help bring up the star ratings
of the animals in the scheme. If ICBF has
no scoring and weighing data, they can
only use what they have to generate their
ratings, which is the ancestry details. To
provide the breeder with accurate ratings
they need the information to do it with,
from birth through to breeding career and
kill out. The Whole Herd Recording will
follow up the animals with a herd visit
only once a year. All the pedigree animals
must be presented. Different information
will be recorded, depending on the
animal’s age and sex. Animals under 150
days old will be weighed, 150 to 700 days
old, weighed and scored. Cows with calf
suckling will be weighed and scored (if
she was already scored under the Gene
Ireland scheme she will only be weighed).
Cow with no calf will just be checked free
of charge to see if she is in milk or not and
for evidence of C section. The cost of the
call out is € 45+ VAT and the cost per
animal is € 5+VATup to 1st of June 2017,
€ 6 +VAT after 1st of June. The buyers of
bulls and cow/heifers are increasingly
demanding accurate and reliable data. Too
many have bought bulls on the pretence
that they would be easy calving or pass on
plenty of milk, and did not deliver. The
opposite is also true in that some very
good animals have mediocre ratings. This
comes from the fact that not enough
information is fed into the system. The
way to correct it is to keep feeding the
information in and increase the reliability.
It should all be worth it in the long term
from a seller’s point of view, and from a
buyer’s point of view.For more
