The mandatory retirement age is 55.
Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be scheduled for two exams administered jointly by the
Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Vermont Police Academy. This exam will be offered
in February. This is a 3 1/2 hour, multiple-choice exam administered in two phases. The first phase,
which covers materials relevant to writing skills and reading comprehension, will be administered by
Vermont Police Academy Staff. There is a $30 (thirty) fee for this exam. Please bring cash or personal
check to cover the cost of the exam. Credit/debit cards will not be accepted. The second phase of the
exam, which covers materials relevant to basic wildlife biology and identification and habitats of
Vermont fish and wildlife species, will be administered by the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife.
NOTE: You may not use a calculator for these exams. Suggested study materials include subject matter
relevant to basic wildlife biology, identification and habitats of Vermont species; and material relevant
to Basic English and math. All qualified applicants will receive notification from the Department of Fish
& Wildlife of the date, time, and location of their exam.
Based on the results of the written exam, candidates who pass will advance to the physical fitness test
and the basic swim test that will be administered immediately after the written test. Candidates who
successfully complete the physical fitness and swim tests, will be scheduled for an oral panel interview.
These interviews will be scheduled in early to mid- March.
Final candidates will undergo psychological screening, background investigation and a physical and
polygraph exam. Once hired incumbents will complete a twelve month probationary training period
which includes participation in the Vermont Police Academy's full-time law enforcement training
program. Upon successful completion of the Vermont Police Academy Training program and an eight
month on-the-job field training period, the employee will be assigned a district anywhere in the state.
Failure to successfully complete this training will result in separation from the uniformed warden force.
General Job Description
Entry level training in law enforcement and other relevant duties within an assigned area for the
Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, Law Enforcement Division. Duties include participation in and
successful completion of a prescribed formal course of studies at the Vermont Police Academy and a
period of on-the-job training conducted by the Department of Fish & Wildlife. An initial period of close
supervision and intensive instruction moderates as an incumbent acquires skill and experience.
Promotion to the position of Game Warden II is automatic upon successful completion of all required
training courses and a fully satisfactory rating at the end of the on-the-job training/probationary period.
Failure to complete the one year traineeship satisfactorily will result in separation from the uniformed
warden force.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school graduation or GED equivalent AND EITHER:
Sixty (60) college credit hours with a major field of study in conservation or natural resources (e.g.,
environmental science or studies, wildlife management, etc.), biological or life sciences (e.g., biology,
zoology, etc.), or criminal justice; OR Two years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer; OR
Two years in the military on full-time duty, with discharge under honorable or other acceptable
conditions; OR Two years of experience in a natural resources field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Additional qualifications required by the Department of Fish and Wildlife or the Vermont Police
Academy include:
Applicants must pass the Vermont Police Academy entrance exam.
Vision: At least 20/60 Snellen test each eye, corrected to 20/20 with normal color perception.
Hearing: Normal.
Physical Fitness: Applicants must meet the physical fitness standards of the Vermont Police Academy.
Ability to swim.
Residency: Candidates must be citizens of the United States.
Vermont residency is required upon employment.
Driver's License: Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of application. Right
to operate a motor vehicle may not have been suspended or revoked within 12 months of application.
Must obtain Vermont Operator's license upon employment.
