Preparing on a Budget - The American Preparedness Council

Preparing on a Budget
Month 1
Cut down on just one or two purchases adding up to $10 or $20.
Use that money toward making more than just the minimum payment on debt
Month 2
Cut down on an additional purchase such as video games and movie rentals
Purchase 5-10 cans/jars of food you eat all the time. Only buy what’s on sale and buy in bulk. For example, the
store has canned corn on sale this month. Buy 5-10 cans.
Month 3


Continue with the same two budget
adjustments as month 1 and 2.
Purchase some packages of pasta
Month 4
Find a Thrift store. Look for tagged items that are discounted. Make a promise when you need to purchase
something, consider whether it is truly a need or want. Look for prepping supplies such as cast iron skillets,
backpack to make a 72 hour emergency kit, extra shoes to put in kit, etc.
Month 5


Continue cutting back on what you started
in previous months.
Purchase first aid supplies to place into 72
hour emergency kit or buy one.
Month 6
Start purchasing additional supplies to place into 72 hour emergency kit and continue as with previous months.
Before you know it you will have a lot of supplies stored
