BRIDGE participants had a great time at the Brewers field trip. Before the game, there was a tailgating party so everyone could experience a usual American tradition. To make it easier, we had food catered in. We had burgers, brats, BBQ chicken, potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans, and dessert, all foods being very typical of an American cook-out. Since it was very chilly out, things wrapped up early outside and everyone entered the stadium to watch the game. For most of the international students, this was their first time seeing a baseball game. Many of the American students tried their best to explain the rules of the game to the international students, but there were many confused looks as the game has some complicated rules! But, at least one thing was understood: the Brewers putting a beat down on the Cubs was all the mattered! GO BREWERS! Mini-golf fun! Due to the cold and rain, our original scavenger hunt and bonfire event was cancelled. Instead, we decided to head to Vitense Golfland for some indoor mini-golf! Most everyone had never mini-golfed before, so it was quite the experience. The indoor mini-golf course at Vitense is Madison-themed with a Memorial Union hole and a State Street hole, to name a few. The rain had stopped towards the end of our indoor golfing adventures, so we made our way to the two outdoor courses for some additional mini-golf madness. For some, it was like being transported to Hollywood! Can you guess which BRIDGE members faces are featured below? Hint: think Brazilian. Thanks for an amazing semester! It’s hard to believe that next Friday is our last BRIDGE event of the semester: our final banquet! It has been such a pleasure meeting and working with all of you over this past semester, and it has been a true delight to see life-long friendships formed and lasting memories made. We’re sure that you’ll all stay in touch with each other, but please don’t forget to stay in touch with us! Thanks again for your participation this semester and good luck in all your future endeavors! Around the World with BRIDGE Name: Jozi Helland Hometown: Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin Major: Environmental Sciences Year: Senior Hailing from the Waterpark Capitol of the World – Wisconsin Dells, (perhaps self proclaimed, but definitely chalk full of unique, off-the-wall – think upside down White House – entertainment) I came to Madison 5 years ago in my pursuit of higher education. Following a random last minute, yet life altering decision to spend a chunk of my senior year in high school working in a self sustainable boy’s home in Lima, Perú, I knew that study abroad was definitely on my radar come college. My insatiable appetite for travel and adventure found me in Cape Town, South Africa for my junior year and Lilongwe, Malawi the summer after my senior year. After graduation in less than two weeks, (OMG!) I will be moving to New Orleans in my personal pursuit of happiness. Between riding horses in the pouring rain without saddles or bridles and attempting to backpack every country in the world, I’ve recently taken up knitting to calm my nerves. While my dream job would consist of owning an absolutely famous restaurant above the 30th floor of some high rise in NYC, one day I hope to find myself back in southern Africa. Currently, my pet project is anaerobic digestion in refugee and IDP camps. It’s been one heck of a semester! Thanks to all the Bridge members that have made it unforgettable (shout out to my partner Ferdinand Schenck!). I hope to see you all again someday. Much love!
