IED Prize - Institution of Engineering Designers

IED ANNUAL PRIZE
For Final Year Students on IED Accredited Degree Courses
Individual Prize Awards
The annual IED prize is awarded to IED student members who produce an outstanding
performance on their final project.
For 2017, the IED has made changes to how the prizes will be awarded following feedback. The
emphasis is now on each eligible FEI/HEI to select prize winners and notify the IED of the
winner’s details.
The changes will ensure that all prize winners will be able to receive their prize in time for their
graduation ceremony.
Prize Winner Selection Conditions
Students can only be selected for the award by a member of FEI/HEI staff who is also an IED
member.
The student whose details are submitted to the IED should already be a member of the IED. Late
applications for prize winners to become an IED Student Member will not be accepted.
Prize Categories
Prizes are awarded by FEIs/HEIs to the student with the best final year project mark on each
type of accredited programme.
At degree level, this would normally be a project with a first class/distinction grade. At other
academic levels, this may be a lower mark/grade.
At HNC/HND level, the nominee has to attain TWO distinctions (or two merits in Scotland) in
their HNC/HND award. One of the distinctions/merits must be in a project at level 5 related to
Engineering Design. The other distinction is to be in either Engineering Design or Computer
Aided Design at level 5.
An institution can award a maximum of five prizes – one in each of the following categories:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Engineering Technician (EngTech) accredited programme (HNC or HND/Foundation Degree)
Incorporated Engineer (IEng) accredited programme (Bachelors)
Chartered Engineer (CEng) accredited programme (Integrated MEng or MSc)
Registered Product Designer (RProdDes) accredited programme (Bachelors)
Chartered Technological Product Designer (CTPD) accredited programme (Integrated MDes
or MA/MSc)
Note: For integrated masters programmes (e.g. MEng or MDes) with projects at both level 6 and
7, the award can only be made to either the Bachelors or Masters level graduate from that
programme and not for both levels.
Judging the Prize
The IED accepts that final year individual projects from different institutions are likely to have
different emphases and learning outcomes. However, all final projects would be expected to
include as a minimum the following aspects to meet the IED/Engineering Council learning
outcomes:




A project brief
Graphical representation of the final design ie photograph, 3-D model or rendering of the
prototype/solution
Evidence of the design process
Evidence of research and analysis
The project would also normally include:

Summary of research undertaken including definition of defined customer/market needs

A product design specification

Evidence of concepts derived and the evaluation process undertaken

Detail design with consideration of materials and manufacturing processes

Evidence of design calculations and/or analysis carried out

Evidence of testing and evaluation carried out

Tutor evaluation of industrial involvement/support, etc., if appropriate

Review/conclusion to work undertaken on the project

Any ethical approval forms if applicable
The FEI/HEI should decide on the prize winners at the assessment/award boards or equivalent
for the programmes or departments running the accredited programmes.
Quality Assurance
Copies of all projects awarded prizes must be kept by the FEI/HEI and made available for review
at the next accreditation event for review by the accreditation panel.
Notifying the IED of Prize Winners
Notification of prize winners should be made by completing the attached form and returning to
the IED at least 4 weeks prior to the graduation ceremony in order to enable certificates to be
printed and returned to the FEI/HEI.
The Prize Award Notification Form should be sent by email to: [email protected]
Please ensure “IED Prize 2017” is included in the email subject. Acknowledgement of receipt
will be made within 5 working days.

member will award the prize to the winning student.
The following citation(s) should be used when presenting the prize at the graduation ceremony
and in all promotional material:

highest grade for an outstanding performance on the final project of an Engineering
Technician accredited programme.
2.

highest grade for an outstanding performance on the final project of an Incorporated
Engineer accredited programme.
3.
