Lecturer in Economics
Further particulars
The Economics Faculty at New College of the Humanities wishes to appoint Lecturers in
two fields. The appointments range from the possibility of a full-time position for an
excellent candidate with appropriate teaching competency, to part-time positions (with
the possibility of a full-time post in future).
About the College
New College of the Humanities is a university-level college based in Bloomsbury,
London. The Master of the College is Professor A C Grayling.
The College offers liberal arts-style major/minor undergraduate degrees in English,
History, Philosophy, Economics, and Politics & International Relations. We also offer
PPE and PPH combinations, as well as a single honours Law LLB.
The College is committed to providing an outstanding academic experience.
Undergraduates receive at least one one-to-one tutorial every week. New College of the
Humanities is committed to a very high staff-student ratio (10:1) and a high number of
contact hours for students.
All students at New College of the Humanities are required to complete courses
additional to their main degree. These combine, on successful completion, to form the
NCH Diploma.
The College offers a range of financial aid to its students, including generous
scholarships and bursaries, ensuring that applicants with the potential to thrive at the
College are given the opportunity to do so.
The first students joined in September 2012, and Economics was one of the founding
subjects. This post is an opportunity to join a growing College at an exciting stage of its
existence. As a small College, it is also a chance to be part of an institution where
collegiality is central. The size of the College facilitates excellent staff-student
relationships and an environment of interdisciplinary debate and interaction. There is,
for example, an interdisciplinary Faculty club, at which Faculty members present
papers for discussion, as well as cross-College research groups. All members of the
Faculty are selected and noted for their commitment to both teaching and original
research. The College is not part of the Research Excellence Framework, but all Faculty
members are strongly encouraged to pursue their individual research, and are
provided with budgets to cover research costs.
About Economics at New College of the Humanities
The Economics Faculty currently comprises: Dr Marianna Koli, Head of Faculty and
Senior Lecturer (teaching International Development); Francesca Foliano (teaching
Econometrics), Dr Mike Peacey (teaching Microeconomics and Industrial Economics),
Dr Melania Nica (teaching Macroeconomics and Corporate Finance), and Dr George
Zouros (teaching Mathematics, Statistics, and Further Mathematics).
The BSc in Economics (with Minor) consists of 9 Major courses. All courses run over
two teaching terms. The first and second terms are full 12-week teaching terms with a
reading week in week 7. The third term, which is eight weeks long, is devoted to
revision, examinations, and the NCH Diploma.
Lectures are attended by up to 20 students; tutorials are a mixture of one-to-one
tutorials and small groups of no more than five students. Students are normally offered
five one-to-one tutorials per course. The structure of the programme is available on the
College website:
http://www.nchlondon.ac.uk/economics-2/
Applicants are invited to explain the range of their teaching interests in their
application materials.
About the Posts
There is a range of posts available in the Economics Faculty, with the possibility of a
full-time post for an excellent candidate.
All posts are for a Lecturer in Economics. The full-time post is a permanent post, which
is subject to a probationary period. Part-time posts are likely to be fixed-term contracts
initially, with the possibility of a permanent contract in future.
We welcome applications from economists with any research specialism, with strong
teaching competence in economic theory, applied economics, and/or political economy.
The successful candidates will be responsible for delivering the following courses in
2016-17:

Introduction to Economics (including microeconomics and macroeconomics, for
1st year Economics Major students);

Economics for Non-Specialists (including microeconomics and macroeconomics,
for 1st year Economics Minor students);

International Political Economy (for 3rd year Economics Major students).
A full-time position normally involves teaching two full courses, both of which run
across both the autumn and spring terms, including weekly lectures and weekly
tutorials. Tutorials are a mix of one-to-one tutorials and small groups, details to be
agreed with each lecturer. Each course also includes some marking of small numbers of
mock and/or summative examination papers, and some revision classes in the summer
term in April/May.
There is also an expectation of availability for some administrative tasks, for example,
internal moderation of assessment in other Economics courses, aiding in Economics
admissions interviews, acting as personal tutor for a small number of students, and
some College outreach, such as visiting schools.
Applicants seeking further information are encouraged to contact Dr Marianna Koli,
Head of the Faculty of Economics, at [email protected] .
