Storage of audio & video data
Embedded and non-embedded data
Embedded are imported into NVIVO database
• Move with the project so easy to back up
• BUT large files are likely to slow down NVIVO’s performance
Non-embedded
• Stored external to NVIVO (Suggestion store in a subfolder
off the project folder)
• Results in improved performance
• Need to back up non-embedded files separately from
NVIVO project file
• If you move the project or files , when requested need to
‘’Update file location’ or ‘Work disconnected’
No other difference to NVIVO’s handling of either
form of the storage
137
© P A Clarke 2009-2010
Embedded or non-embedded
Default maximum size of a video or audio file that can
be embedded is 20Mb
To reduce this size or disable the embedded option
Tool > Options > then from Applications Options
dialog > click Audio/Video tab > reduce size OR
untick Embed media option > click OK

necessary instead of selected
passages or summaries and/or key
words

thumbnails with details
