New project button or File > New project 2. Name the project e.g. ‘Volunteer_mm’ 3. Click in List view 3. Right-click > Import internals 4. Select one region at a time in the image > Dotted box appears in the region > Add text as in previous step 2. Right-click on the row number > select >Assign Region to Rows > Region co-ordinates display in the Region column > Click outside the picture to clear the selection 3. Either drag and drop the log row to the node OR Select a new region of the image and drag and drop that to the node 2. Memo: • Detail view > right-click in a Log row > Links > Memo link > Link to new memo > Ctrl-shift-T to add time and date > write memo 2. In List view > right-click on item > Export picture/log > Entire content > select from Properties > select from Related content > click OK > select location > name the file > Save 2. Output saved in .html format. View in browser. 135 © P A Clarke 2009-2010 Module 6 : Working with audio/video data Audio and video data have similar features and work similarly in NVIVO 8 Audio formats: •mp3 •.wma •.wav Video formats: •.mpg •.mpeg •.mpe •.wmv •.avi •.mov •.qt •.mp4 © P A Clarke 2009-2010 136 Storage of audio & video data Embedded and non-embedded data Embedded are imported into NVIVO database • Move with the project so easy to back up • BUT large files are likely to slow down NVIVO’s performance Non-embedded • Stored external to NVIVO (Suggestion store in a subfolder off the project folder) • Results in improved performance • Need to back up non-embedded files separately from NVIVO project file • If you move the project or files , when requested need to ‘’Update file location’ or ‘Work disconnected’ No other difference to NVIVO’s handling of either form of the storage 137 © P A Clarke 2009-2010 Embedded or non-embedded Default maximum size of a video or audio file that can be embedded is 20Mb To reduce this size or disable the embedded option Tool > Options > then from Applications Options dialog > click Audio/Video tab > reduce size OR untick Embed media option > click OK 138 © P A Clarke 2009-2010 Activity 1 Import audio /video files 1. Internals > Interviews > List view > right-click > Import internal file ‘Audio interview with Peter’ 2. Open the file: • Double-click the name in the List view to display in the Detail view. 3. From the Media menu > click Play Speed. - You can also use the play speed slider at any time to change the speed - * In the activity that follows you may like to use the short cut keys – see previous slide instead of the Play, Skip and Stop options on the media toolbar 146 © P A Clarke 2009-2010 Activity 4 transcribe (cont.) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. On the Media menu > click Play Mode > select Transcribe On the Media toolbar, click the Play button A transcript entry is added with the starting time in the Timespan field. Enter the required content. You can pause or skip back in 10 second intervals (this default time can be changed to e.g. a shorter time interval) Press the Stop button when you have completed the entry. The end time is added to the Timespan field. Although the new row appears on top of the row you just transcribed, the order will be corrected as you proceed. Continue until you have transcribed the required content. Turn-off transcribe mode > on the Media menu, click Play Mode > Normal. 147 © P A Clarke 2009-2010 Importing transcripts Transcripts can be prepared in Word or Excel and imported in .doc, .docx, or .txt and some .pdf formats Transcripts can be prepared with or without timestamps. To make more room when you are working with video ‘Undock’ the windows and make the detail view full screen. 2. Decide if full transcripts are always necessary instead of selected passages or summaries and/or key words 3. List view has options to show thumbnails with details 4. To print a display of (Tree) nodes This is if you want only the icons and names: First, open (any node) then View > Detail View Right Then: a. Right click on your Tree node structure’s first top level Tree node b. Select Expand/Collapse >Expand All Tree nodes c. Right click again, select Print> Print list d.
