Rules and Guidelines for Double Jeopardy Divisions
A double Jeopardy division is a fun and exciting format that allows players to play both 8 ball
and 9 ball in a single evening. Because you are out only one night, it is the most affordable way
to get plays in for both formats, and allows you that extra chance at going to Vegas in 9 ball.
With both matches going on at the same time, no matter how full your roster is, all players on
your team will have a chance to play in at least one format.
Because it is unique, there are a few guidelines that need to be followed to make your night of
play as enjoyable as possible. Below are listed a few rules that will help make this possible:
1. Continuous play – Rules for starting and playing team matches are the same as regular 8 ball
and 9 ball divisions. Team matches in each format must start within 15 minutes of match start
time or will result in a forfeit. After the first match has begun, all subsequent matches of that
format will be continuous (By continuous, we mean your next player is put up immediately after
the previous match is completed. This should not take more than 2 to 3 minutes and defiantly
not more than 5 min). Because the two formats are separate divisions, it could be possible for
the team match in one format to begin at start time, and the other team match start up to 15
minutes later. Once matches have begun in their respective formats, play becomes continuous.
2. Table assignments – Because 8 ball typically takes longer to play a match than 9 ball, one team
table is designated for 8 ball and the other team table for 9 ball. With matches of the same
format always played on the same table continuous play will be much easier to maintain. If a
team match in one format is completed before the other, then play for the remaining matches
will be played on both tables.
3. Rosters – Rosters are the same for both 8 ball and 9 ball. Players should be used in such a way
that they are not playing in one format when they become needed in the other. This could result
in a forfeit situation or a player having to play when they might not be the best player for their
opponent. One aspect of double jeopardy that makes it exciting and unique is the added
strategic problem of utilizing team members effectively in 2 different formats at the same time.
4. Scorekeeping – By making sure that everyone on your team knows how to keep score in both 8
ball and 9 ball, teams will be able to utilize all the players on their rosters in the best possible
situations.
5. Playoffs – Because double jeopardy is ran as two separate divisions, both your 8 ball and 9 ball
teams do not always make the playoffs in the same session. For this reason, both rounds of 8
ball are played the first week of playoffs, and both rounds of 9 ball are played the second week.
This eliminates teams having to show up both weeks if they are not playing in one format.
