Positive Behavioural Support Manager
(with a focus on people who demonstrate behaviours that may present
challenges & risks to their environment, to themselves and to those living
and working with them)

Main Purpose:
To provide a responsive & positive behavioural support function to both the
people using Bethphage’s services and the staff, ensuring that people
receive a holistic, person centered service.
Hours of Duty:
The hours of duty are 22.5 per week there is an expectation that some
support will be provided at evenings and weekends as discussed with the
relevant manager.

their quality of life. We are a Positive Behaviour Organisation, seeking to apply the principles of
PBS to how we work with everyone we come into contact with.
The PBS Manager will work, in the main, with Bethphage’s Operational Management team to
support the promotion of positive behaviours and the effective management of situations that give
rise to the occurrence of, and increase in, behaviours that present challenges to people and
property.
Primary Functions
1. Manage and lead the PBS team, providing PBS support across the organisation and providing
high quality support, supervision and professional guidance.
2. Take the lead role on updating and improving the capacities of the organisation for people
with complex needs and in developing our specialist expertise.
3. Role model the values of PBS and of Bethphage in all your interactions, ensuring that whilst
working with the people we support they are treated with dignity and respect, have choice and
control over their lives and their Human Rights are respected.

4. Maintain good communication and team working with each team, ensuring the participation of
the people we support in all relevant decision making.
5. Enhance the reputation of Bethphage with regards to specialist support, maintaining and
developing positive and professional multi-disciplinary relationships.
PBS Focus
Oversee the PBS team in delivering the following:
6. Ensuring the PBS pathway is up to date and fit for purpose, and that the PBS team has
access to relevant theory and tools to undertake high quality PBS work.
7. Manage and oversee the PBS team caseload, ensuring PBS staff have adequate resources
to achieve positive outcomes.
8. Instigate and carry out full functional assessments, working with staff teams to promote an
understanding of the skills and needs of the person and the reasons for their behaviour.
9. Use assessment data to develop evidence based strategies to support the person to develop
alternative ways of getting their needs met, focusing on enhancing quality of life.
10. Involve relevant stakeholders in both the assessment and the development of the PBS plan;
train and support staff in the implementation of the PBS plan.
11. Provide positive feedback to staff to enable them to reflect on their own skills and needs and
to be able to consistently implement agreed strategies.
12. Ensure that PBS plans are regularly reviewed.
13. Work with relevant Managers to monitor and evaluate behavioural support services in order to
maintain and, wherever possible, enhance the quality of the service.
14. Work with managers and staff teams to promote accurate reporting and monitoring of
behavioural data, promoting evidence-based decision-making.
15. Provide suggestions, advice and specialist knowledge to improve the individual outcomes for
the person.
16. Interlink with and work in partnership with local specialist services and other external
professionals in order to add additional skill and expertise to the team.
17. Identify any situations which are high risk and/or of serious concern which require external
support or expertise, work with the Service Manager and the Area Manager to develop plans.
18. Take part in the pre-assessment of people, who have behavioural support needs, moving into
services managed by Bethphage and work with the relevant Manager to develop an
appropriate plan of support with a particular focus on the management and reduction of
behaviours that may challenge.
19. Contribute to the assessment of people, who have behavioural support needs, moving out of
services managed by Bethphage. Work in conjunction with the relevant Bethphage Manager
and external staff team and in some instances the new provider, to develop an appropriate

plan of support, including data to support incident reduction and with a particular focus on the
management and reduction of behaviours that may challenge.
20. Take part in the debrief of staff who have been involved in any serious incident, as required.
21. Develop and deliver relevant training to staff employed to work with people who may present
challenges to themselves, those around them or their environment.
Human Resources
22. Take part in the recruitment of staff for specialist behavioural services, along with the
registered manager as and when required. Identify training needs, and contribute to the
induction, training, support, debriefing and development of all relevant staff as required.
23. Line manage PBS staff and oversee the work of any volunteers that are involved in PBS work,
modelling PBS through your approach and promoting reflective practice and professional
development.
Health & Safety
24. Work with the relevant manager to ensure that Bethphage’s Health & Safety Policy and
Procedures are implemented and monitored.
25. Working with the relevant manager to ensure that risks are assessed in a person centred way,
considering the impact on the person if the risk is not taken and ensuring that a risk averse
culture doesn’t develop.
26. Oversee physical intervention training within Bethphage, ensuring that it is fit for purpose,
consistent with PBS values and used appropriately with a focus on restraint reduction.
Strategic Focus
27. To contribute, as a member of the Senior Management Team, to the planning and
development of Bethphage, ensuring strategic vision and values support the PBS framework,
and supporting Bethphage’s development as a Positive Behaviour Organisation.
28. Lead on policy development and review in relation to person centred risk management,
positive behavior support and the use of physical interventions. Provide input to ensure all
policy areas are consistent with vision, values and legislative requirements.
29. Share best practice across Bethphage to enhance the knowledge and skill of staff at all levels.
Build on what we do well, being honest, vigilant, open to change and improvement in those
instances where we might have provided better outcomes; promoting reflective practice.
30. Promote practice consistent with PBS across the organization, ensuring a focus on PCP,
participation, active involvement, skills teaching, communication and positive reinforcement.
Work to ensure the structure is in place for people’s needs to be matched with appropriate
environments and support.

31. Complete quarterly updates for the Board of Trustees, providing them with sufficient data to
understand the organisation’s culture, the outcomes from PBS support and to identify areas
where additional resources are required.
General
32. Provide support to Area and Service Managers to ensure they deliver effective support
consistent with regulatory frameworks and good practice standards.
33. Ensure areas of good practice are recognised and that comments, concerns and complaints
are reported in line with Bethphage guidelines.
34. Foster good relationships with colleagues, local authorities, relevant health professionals,
advocates and neighbours.
35. Keep up to date with current thinking and approaches, attending training sessions and feeding
back to the Operations Director and the area manager team with relevant recommendations.
36. Attend relevant training as identified for the position, taking responsibility for keeping up to
date with PBS theory and practice.
37. Undertake other duties, appropriate to the post, which may be determined by the Operations
Director.
38. Support the future development of any new service where behavioural support would be
required.
Additional Responsibilities
39. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post.
