STOURBRIDGE RFC MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDELINES
INTRODUCTION
Social media offers great opportunities to promote SRFC and rugby and to engage with members and people outside the club. Unfortunately it
also has the potential to cause harm and offence to the club, its members as well as the RFU and other clubs and individuals. Consequently
the club has produced this policy as a guide to members on the use of the SRFC social media channels and any use of social media where
there is any direct or implied link between the poster and SRFC. It is a condition of membership that all members abide by this policy.
Additionally the club has appointed a Social Media Officer to police social media usage and to advise members on this.
SRFC ACCOUNTS
Any social media accounts or pages bearing the SRFC name, badge or logo, or which give the impression that they represent SRFC, can only
be set up with the club’s permission and must be operated under the conditions of use stipulated by the club and the chosen medium when
permission is given. Any member wishing to set up an account or page should contact the Social Media Officer.
SCOPE
This policy covers members’ use of all SRFC social media accounts and pages including web sites and message boards. It also covers use of
any current and future social media channel where the person posting can be identified as a member of SRFC. Examples of current social
media channels include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linked In and message boards such as Rolling Maul.
WHAT TO POST
Our aim is to promote a positive image of SRFC and inform people of the good things we do and achieve as well as publicising events. For
example:



Good news and positive comments
News of future events
Praise for club, team or member’s achievements
WHAT NOT TO POST

Any postings which bring SRFC or the game into disrepute or are threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting

Any reference to a person’s ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, faith, gender, sexual orientation, or disability

Anything showing lack of respect for the game’s partners and sponsors and for other clubs, their players and supporters

Criticism of and any suggestion of bias by match officials

Any links to inappropriate content

Any requests to share or elicit personal information

Criticism of SRFC and its operation. If you have a problem with how the club is run speak to an official or email the club secretary

Comments and images which could be damaging to the reputation or career of the persons concerned

Details of confidential or commercially sensitive club information

Any comment or ‘liking’ or reposting on items posted which contravene the above
SAFEGUARDING
Members are encouraged not to; Volunteers, Employees and Coaches should not; do any of the following:




Communicate with children* through social media
Be ‘friends’ with children
Comment on a child’s status or post on their accounts
Post photographs and names of children unless you have their parents’ or guardians’ explicit permission
*A ‘child’ in this context is any playing member of the club under the age of 18. A child is defined by the Children Act 1989 as ‘a person under
the age of 18 years. For the purposes of this policy, the legal definition applies. However, if a 17 year old boy is playing rugby under the RFU’s
Regulation 15.3.7, while playing or training with adults, he is treated as an adult. Therefore, the detail of the safeguarding clauses of this
policy do not apply. Regulation 15.3.7 does not apply to girls under the age of 18.
CONSEQUENCES
Members are responsible for their own postings. Reposting or ‘liking’ a posting implies endorsing the original posting. Inappropriate posts make
a member liable to disciplinary action by SRFC and/or the RFU as well as risking possible civil or criminal action. Deleting or removing an
inappropriate posting or publically apologising for it does not prevent disciplinary action being taken. SRFC could be vicariously liable for
inappropriate material posted by its employees or volunteers in the course of their service to the club and would be subject to disciplinary
action. Any such action by an employee would be considered to be gross misconduct. SRFC can also be liable for comments made on social
media sites controlled by SRFC.
