Training League Philosophy:
The training league philosophy is an introduction to the game of basketball. The emphasis is on skill
development, basketball fundamentals, and the basic principles regarding some of the game rules.
Practices should cover improving player skills; both offensively and defensively, not on running plays
that emphasize scoring and winning. Improving dribbling, shooting, and defensive skills in this league
is more important than teaching the players how to win. A coaches¶SDFNHWRI what should be covered
in team practice and a sample practice schedule will be provided to the head coaches.
Game Length:
a. Eight minute continuous clock
b. Halftime ± four minutes
c. Each game will consist of four quarters with each quarter divided in half to create eight«
four minute periods for ease of substitutions
d. Each half will begin with a jump ball
Uniforms and Basketball Size:

No shorts with pockets. The league will provide required shorts
Boys League: Jerseys will be reversible with the home team wearing white
No jewelry, which includes necklaces, bracelets or earrings
No shooting arm sleeves
Knee Pads, head bands, wrist sweat bands are allowed
Ball size: 27.5 inch ball
Time Outs:
a. There are no assigned timeouts
b. The clock will stop when a player is injured
c. Clock may also stop when a coach or official needs to provide assistance to a player
Defense:

Offense:

Offense will consist of four on four
All players are encouraged to dribble the ball up the court
The coach will be the 5th player at the foul line to pass the ball for the start of play
When the coach is on the floor it is their responsibility to get all offensive players involved
The coach will be allowed to hold the ball for a maximum of 5 seconds or it will be a
turnover
f. The coach can receive a return pass from a player, but the ball must be put in play in 5
seconds
g. Obvious fouls will be called and the ball will be put in play from the side line closest to
where the foul occurred. The ball can be thrown in to the coach or teammate

Must Play Rule / Must Sit Rule / Managing Substitutions:

All players must play half of every quarter.
Must play subs will be done at the 4 minute mark of each quarter.
Coaches are allotted time during the subbing period for match ups.
If a team has only 5 players the coach may sub accordingly.
If a player shows up late they must play half of the remainder of the game.
Coaching Requirements:
a. Each team is required to have three certified Coaches
b. Two coaches may be on the court at one time - one coach on the offensive side, (pivot
position) and one under the basket on defense. The third coach is a bench coach
c. Defensive coaches will call fouls and walking violations if no referees are present
d. Game # 3 semi-traditional basketball, with coaches off the court only in the 4th quarter
e. Games # 4, 5, 6: no coaches on the court in the 2nd and 4th quarter
f. Games # 7, 8: no coaches on the court in 1st, 3rd, 4th quarters. Coaches in 2nd Quarter only
g. Games # 9-10: no coaches on the court, unless providing instruction to players
h. Coaches will need each parent and player signature on the parent and player contracts
i. If a parent, player or coach violates any item on the parent / player / coaches contract they
are subject to action from the board
j. If a coach, player, or parent is ejected from a game, there will be an automatic one game
suspension with the possibility of additional games or expulsion from the league
k. Each Team is required to have a team parent to assist with communication, collecting
information and assistance with the end of year party
l. Each team is required to get a team sponsor
m. The home team sits on the right side of the table when facing the court
n. The visiting team is responsible for the time clock and sits on the Left side of the table
when facing the court
o. Coaches and players must clean up their bench prior to leaving the court
p. Post-game team meetings must take place outside the gym if another scheduled game is
about to take place
q. Negative cheering from the players, coaches or fans will not be tolerated or allowed
MEMBERS OF THE BOARD RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REVIEW THE RULES AND MAKE
CHANGES AS NECESSARY TO ENSURE THAT THE LEAGUE MAINTAINS ITS GOALS FOR
SPORTSMANSHIP AND FAIR PLAY.
