FATHERS’ DAY SUNDAY SERMON THEME: ROLES THAT FATHERS PLAY Fathers play many roles in parenting their children; some do it daily and some once in a while. We have always thought that it is the mother that takes care of our children, though they do it better but the fathers have greater role to play because the women are just the second in command. Whereby the father fails to perform his roles, the family, Church and the nation suffers. A. Five roles of the fathers (5Ps) 1. PROBLEM SOLVER: Fathers help in the emotional/social need of the children. The children face a lot of challenges as they grow up, they look up to fathers to direct them and solve problems for them. 2. PLAY MATES: When fathers play with their children, it affects their mental and psychological development because it makes them think fast and do the right thing. 3. PROVIDER: This is the traditional role of the father. He is the bread winner and also has to meet the financial needs of the family . 4. PRINCIPLE GUIDE: The father guides and disciplines the children. The society today is filled with negative values and activities. Therefore the father must direct and guide their children standing on the family’s principles. 5. PREPARER It is the father’s duty to prepare the children for challenges and protect them in times of danger. Also advises them on educational issues, teaching the children the subject that are difficult for them and gives them examples about life. Jesus Christ was once a child, He grew up with in his parents’ home. He was trained from childhood, and grew up with wisdom and in love. He performed all His physical role as a child. When He grew up He also performed His spiritual role and became our Lord and Father. Fathers do not need to wait for the children grow up before they can perform their roles. In Christian family, fathers are very important. Without them: the family, Church and society cannot function. They must give good gifts to their children and keep their family together through family devotion. B. Spiritual responsibilities of the Father i. Being a Lover: He must love, cherish, nurture and care for the family (mother and children). It is a daily responsibility. ii. Fathers are husbands: Eph. 5v22-23 He must love the wife because he is the figure of Christ in that home. He must sacrifice everything for the family. Every women needs to know that there is no contender in the house and the husband have to tell his wife everyday “I love you”, even though she knows that you love her. Fathers must cherish their wives above all other things. In Job 1v1-3: Job was one of the greatest/richest in his days, yet he was a leader, teacher, priest, lover and father. These are the five responsibilities that Job combined even as a rich man. How many rich men today can fulfill that ministry of Job. Even when Job was going through challenges and everybody deserted him, he continued to love and care for his family. We cannot say that the present challenges around us will not allow us to serve God. Many men had chosen their profession above God. Fathers, Let us have time to serve the Lord. Some homes are suffering now because some wives are performing the roles of the father, let the fathers return to Christ and take their rightful positions in their homes.
