Final Competition
Preliminary Round Guidelines
1. Finalists will advance to the Final Round
on August 6 (Primary), August 7 (Youth &
Collegiate), August 13 (Junior), August 14
(Elementary), August 20 (Mid-Teen), August
21 (Sr. Teen) at the Indiana State Fair.
1. All communication is by email. You will
receive your performance time a few days
after the final entry deadline.
2. Pianists may NOT perform the same piece of
music when entering more than one category.
3. ALL pianists must audition in person.
4. Maximum performance time for Youth,
Primary, Elementary or Junior level is 5
minutes. Maximum performance time for
Mid-Teen, Sr. Teen and Collegiate level
is 7 minutes. There is no minimum time
limit but your piece must be a minimum
of 16 measures long-not counting repeats.
You must play your piece without cuts
and may be from memory or with printed
music. Memorization is NOT required at the
Preliminary round.
5. The preliminary competition has four
different sites to choose from along with 25
different dates. See locations and dates at
the bottom of this section.
6. Each participant, in all categories and age
levels, will be heard by a panel of judges.
Please provide an original score for the
judges to view during your audition. No
photocopied music will be accepted. Failure
to do this will result in disqualification.
Judging will be on the following:
a) Accuracy
b) Rhythm
c) Technique
d) Musicianship/Interpretation
e) Other factors/Stage presence,
Overall musical & general effect
7. Finalists will be notified by email of their
advancement to the Final Round of
Competition.
8. Finalists have the opportunity to play a
public performance in the Indiana Arts
Building during the State Fair. Youth, Primary,
Elementary & Junior Finalists will be invited
to play a maximum 15 minute program. MidTeen, Sr. Teen and Collegiate will be invited
to play a maximum 30 minute program. An
appointed day and time for your program
will be assigned to each finalist after the
Preliminary Round is completed.

6. The finalists will be presented awards at the end
of each division of their respective category.

7. The competition consists of seven separate
age divisions, age as of June 1, 2016.
ENTRY INFORMATION
1. All entries must be made in accordance with
the terms and conditions.
2. Online Entry - To enter into the Indiana State
Fair, please go to www.exhibitorscorner.
indianastatefair.com and enter online and
follow the prompts. Each exhibitor/pianist is
required to pay an entry fee at the time of
entry. An exhibitor /pianist act will not be
considered entered into the Indiana State
Fair until payment is made in full. Payment
can be made online with a valid credit card.

8. The competition consists of fourteen
categories: Classical, Non-Classical, Sonatina,
Sonata, Ragtime, Jazz, Blues & Boogie,
Original Composition, Ensemble, American
Songbook, International Music,Ludwig van
Beethoven, and Claude Debussy.
New for 2016: Indiana Bicentennial, Music from
Video Games. Definition of each category at
the bottom of this section.

4. All entrants MUST be a legal resident of
Indiana through August 31, 2016
5. Only for piano performances.
6. All participants will receive three (3)
complimentary Indiana State Fair tickets,
commemorative Young Hoosier State Piano

from The Titanic, etc.
INTERNATIONAL MUSIC: Title describes a
location outside the United States. Example:
Nights of Spain, The British Grenadiers,
Tahitian Sunset, etc.
INDIANA BICENTENNIAL: Any patriotic piece
or a piece associated with the State of Indiana.
Example: Back Home Again in Indiana, On the
Banks of the Wabash, America, Yankee Doodle.
MUSIC FROM VIDEO GAMES: Any piece from a
video game soundtrack.
SPECIAL CATEGORIES JUST FOR 2016:
Honoring Composers
Ludwig van Beethoven: Any original composition by
Beethoven-no simplified arrangements
Claude Debussy: Any original composition by Debussy-no
simplified arrangements
PRELIMINARY SITES

CATEGORIES
CLASSICAL: Includes standard repertoire
by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and other
composers from the Baroque, Classical,
Romantic, or 20th-century. Must be for piano
solo, no arrangements or adaptations.
NON-CLASSICAL: Popular, Country, Religious,
Method Books and composers such as
Alexander, Bober, Mier, and Rollin.
SONATINA: One or more movements from
a Sonatina by any composer. The word
‘Sonatina’ must be included in the title of the
piece. All movements must be from the same
sonatina.
SONATA: One movement of a sonata from any
period of music.
RAGTIME: Any piece in the style of Scott
Joplin Rags.
JAZZ, BLUES & BOOGIE: Any piece in the jazz,
blues, or boogie style.
