Planning Instruction for Content Literacy

Planning Instruction for
Content Literacy
Instructional planning brings students and texts
together in ways that support content literacy and
learning.
Quality Instruction
Coaches on the field do not just lecture…
THEY COACH!
As teachers we must also get in there…
AND TEACH!
Chapter 5 (10th Edition) explains through:
Explicit Strategy Instruction,
Planning Lessons /Units,
and Planning Collaborative Instruction
Explicit Strategy Instruction
A coach uses the explicit strategy whether he
realizes it or not 
Explicit Instruction on the Field
On a team, students follow a
formula of learning to play.
I.
Tryouts – The athlete shows what she can and can not
do. The coach notes which skills need improvement.
II. Practice- The coach demonstrates how he would like
for the athlete to perform. The player then practices
the movements that were demonstrated under the
supervision of the coach.
III. Game- The athlete applies what she was taught during
the practice sessions and wins the game.
Explicit Instruction in the Classroom
1. Teacher explains what the strategy consists of.
2. Teacher explains why this strategy is important.
3. Teacher explains when to use the strategy in actual reading (e.g., what to
notice in a text that tips off the reader that this particular strategy should
be used).
4. Teacher models how to perform the strategy in an actual context (e.g. by
doing a think-aloud using a real text) while students observe.
5. Teacher guides learner practice. Teachers and students work through
several increasingly challenging examples of the strategy together using
authentic texts. Teacher gradually releases responsibility to the students,
allowing them to do what they can on their own. The teacher intervenes
only when support is needed.
6. Students independently use the strategy as they pursue their own reading
and projects.
