Play-Based Therapy: Not Just for Fun!

Play-Based Therapy:
Not Just for Fun!
What is play-based speech-language therapy?
Interactive playtime is a very important aspect of
speech-language therapy at Avita Health System.
Play is a vital learning tool for the developing
child and the therapist. The play-based strategy
for therapy focuses on increasing the frequency
and complexity of the child’s communication
and language. It encourages interaction between
the therapist and the child to maximize therapy
outcomes. When a child is working on speech and
language skills, while having a great time, the level of
participation, cooperation, and success increases.
While play-based therapy may be less structured
than traditional therapy approaches, it is purposeful
and goal-oriented. Communication skills go
hand-in-hand with the development of play skills;
therefore, speech-language pathologists evaluate
and provide treatment for both communication and
play skills together.
Play-based therapy benefits both the child
and the therapist:
• By learning to communicate in real-life
situations, such as playtime, the child is
better able to generalize newly learned
communication skills to other situations
outside the therapy setting
• Motivates the child to participate because it
involves fun activities
• Provides an environment where the child can
shine and show what they know
• Reduces pressure for the child to “perform”
• Allows the child to focus better
• Allows the therapist to build rapport with
the child
• Gives the therapist a chance to see the child in
a more natural environment
• Provides the therapist with the interaction
necessary to evaluate and gain insight into a
child’s speech and language abilities
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to ask
questions about therapy sessions and goals for
treatment. The hope is to make speech therapy an
enjoyable learning experience for all involved.
