To celebrate Darren Wood reaching his milestone 500
runs we sent our reporter James Ball to chat to Darren
to find out about his epic parkrun journey.

James: So let’s go back to the start. Tell me a bit more about you and how you
started running
Darren: I was about 22 when I started parkrunning. My running journey started a
few years before then, and my first event was the Grim Challenge. At the time I was
smoking, quite unfit, but liked the idea of a muddy challenge! I can remember
running round Richmond Park craving cigarettes, but quite soon realised I needed to
knock that on the head! A year or 2 later, I heard about Bushy Time Trial …I thought
it wasn’t for me, it was just for the fast runners, so I didn’t go to the first event,
nerves got the better of me, but I did turn up for the second event, and realised there
were people there that I knew from the club.
James: So having lived through it all, how has parkrun changed your life, what has
the effect of running 10 years at one event given you?
Darren: I think it has definitely made me more consistent when running. I’ve also
met a load of wonderful friends, both at Bushy and now at Frimley. You also meet
some amazing people when you visit other events, and everyone makes you feel so
welcome, you always have something in common with them. It’s the people for me
which make parkrun, it’s not all about the running!!
