Your Name: _______________________________ PUMAS TAKING ACTION! RAISING CONSCIOUSNESS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES FACING OUR COMMUNITY RP1 CULMINATING PROJECT (10% of your final grade) STATEMENT OF THE CHALLENGE Now that we have a better understanding of who we are and we are becoming more “woke” and aware of injustices around the country, it is time for us to begin to take action! Our RP1 Culminating Project requires us to complete four different surveys from three different groups of people in order to create a list of different social justice issues facing our different communities. A survey is a method of collecting information from people before we conduct research. We are going to survey adults in our school community, upper classmen, lower classmen, and 7th graders in our school community, some of our family members, and different people in our neighborhood. Each survey will count as 20pts towards your project grade. The final 20pts will come from a written reflection of your process (100pts total). Because the project will require you to schedule time with other people, you will two weeks to complete it. It is due on Monday, October 17th – the last day of class before Benchmarks! HISTORY OF THE CHALLENGE This project is modeled after a method called canvassing. Canvassing can be traced all the way back to the 1600s in England when politicians would go door to door trying to get people to support their cause. Back then, if politicians did not find enough votes during their canvass, they would drop out of the election. For our project, we will use canvassing as a way to determine the biggest issues facing our community, and who is better to ask than the people who make up our communities?
