PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned doctorate in social work or related field or JD from an accredited college or university is preferred at time of appointment. Applicants with considerable progress towards doctoral degree or JD completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of earned doctorate or JD is required prior to the start of the second probationary year following initial appointment. The successful candidates must demonstrate the following: MSW with two years post-MSW experience or BASW with five years post-BASW experience; Experience working in rural social work with Indigenous Peoples and/or other marginalized groups; Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds; Potential for or evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarship and/or creative activities, as well as service to the community and the profession; Willingness to teach classes on campus and online, using synchronous and asynchronous methods; and Record of and/or interest in teaching a broad range of courses using a variety of methodologies. Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience at the graduate and/or undergraduate level; Distance learning teaching experience; Familiarity with critical social work theory; Practice, research, or teaching in contexts that serve Indigenous Peoples and rural communities. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: The successful candidates will be prepared to teach social work coursework consistent with the Department’s purpose and values (http:/www.humboldt.edu/socialwork). Teaching responsibilities will be in both graduate and undergraduate courses in both face to face and online environments. We hope to attract candidates that have expressed interests in teaching, research, and community service relevant to Indigenous Peoples. Significant aspects of our Department’s purpose are to establish meaningful partnerships with rural communities and Native American tribes, to continue to improve the BASW/MSW curriculum in this regard, and to educate social workers to be prepared to work in tribal and rural contexts. The primary professional responsibilities of faculty members are: teaching; research, scholarship, a n d creative activity; and service to the University, profession and to the community. Dedication to excellence in teaching is a longstanding tradition at Humboldt State University and is the primary criterion in promotion and tenure considerations. Responsibilities may include 3 units of normal ancillary/collateral duties (including student advising, faculty governance, university and college committee work, and community relations) and teaching an average of 12 units in lower and upper division undergraduate courses, foundation and/or advanced year graduate courses. Additional professional responsibilities include: maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in other academic functions. Probationary faculty hired in 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 are granted course release in their first two years of appointment and are provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. Probationary faculty are also eligible for grants from the university to support research, scholarship, and other forms of creative activity. GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department of Social Work offers courses year-round on campus and online through our Distributed Learning BA and MSW Programs. Our CSWE accredited BASW Program has been educating students since 1945, while the accredited MSW program began in 2004. Beginning in 2011/12, the department initiated online BASW and MSW programs to serve rural and tribal communities. Of the three colleges on campus, Social Work is part of the College of Professional Studies. The Social Work Department at Humboldt State University includes approximately 190 BASW majors and 110 MSW students, 16 faculty, and 5 staff. The department is committed to collaborative partnerships with tribal, community-based and global initiatives. Humboldt State University is located in Arcata, California, in the northwestern part of the state.
